Skateboards for a Better World!

Posted on June 30, 2009 at 03:34 AM

So if it's one thing I love about blogging on this tour it's being able to spread the word on how Warped Tour really affects people's lives. Sure, you go to a show with all your friends, see your favorite bands and meet your favorite artists, but to some it's much more than that. It's a place where people can truly make a difference.

During all the first day craziness I ran into a very interesting man wearing a lab coat in the lovely 90 degree weather we were having in sunny California. He was standing under a CreateASkate tent with tons of kids MAKING skateboards and I made it my mission to find out exactly what was going on. It turns out that this non-profit is all about spreading the word on skateboarding and education!

CreateASkate is a non-profit education company sponsoring a set of HUGE Warped Tour auctions at the end of the tour, with all the proceeds going to Unite The United, Kevin Lyman’s non-profit organization. Bands had the chance to pick up blank skate decks, create whatever artwork they wanted, and at the end of tour, auction off the boards to charity. Crazy right? The guys in TSOL, although only being on the tour for a few days, were so stoked about this idea that they came running once they heard about what was going on!

So who was that guy in the lab coat anyways? The answer to that is Paul Shmitt, or Professor Shmitt, as he likes to be called. Shmitt has been making skateboards his whole life and has decided to give back to people with interests in skateboarding. He creates curriculums in schools where students apply physics to create skateboards from scratch. He also happens to be a lifelong friend of Mr. Lyman, you know... that guy who started Warped Tour some fifteen years ago. Want to know something even crazier? Professor Shmitt manufactured (from his own design!) the first ever skate ramp at Warped! How cool is that?

Shmitt allowed friends and family of artists to make their own skate decks today, which included sanding, inking their designs, and coating their boards for some long lasting protection! Check these kids out!

Look out for a bunch of posts just like this one! You guys are getting the WHOLE Warped experience here! If there’s a story you want to know about… ask me and I’ll make it happen!

Finding Our Way in San Francisco!

Posted on June 28, 2009 at 04:27 PM

It really doesn't get much better than this. Warped Tour brings us to many cities across North America but rarely do we ever get to play right in the middle of a major metropolitan area. Having all seven stages setup along the waterfront (right under the Bay Bridge!) in San Francisco was truly unbelievable. Just check this shot out!

 Pomona 233

It’s the second day of Warped Tour and everybody here is still finding their groove when it comes to the daily routine. Eight hundred people, which includes artists, sponsors, and the production staff, travel on this tour and make it the festival it is today. Everybody plays their role in setting up their tents and stages, making sure everybody during the day has a great time, and then breaking it all down so we can do it again at the next venue… and this happens EVERY SINGLE DAY! That just goes to show you how much passion really goes into this tour!

The first couple of days are a bit rough on everybody. Bands that have never traveled before on Warped are getting a good taste of what it means to play in 90 degree weather while veterans are reacquainting themselves with what goes on here in addition to showing the newbies the tricks of the trade; It’s all about family when we’re you’re out on the road! No matter how tough it gets out here, we all make this happen for you!

So what should you expect to see in the coming posts? Just about everything from the crazy circle pits that Anti-Flag calls for everyday to how people just like you volunteer in the catering line. That’s all for now folks! Pictures and videos are coming tonight! See you in the pit!

The Return of The Punk Rock Summer Camp!

Posted on June 27, 2009 at 01:46 PM

It’s here! It’s finally here! Warped Tour has officially begun and I’m thinking this is going to be a GREAT summer!

I always go through an emotional roller coaster before this punk rock inspired road trip starts. Three years down the line as a Warped staff member and I still get shivers up my spine on day one. This is what the whole year comes down to for me. Believe it or not, I’m still in school and summer break for me IS Warped Tour. Heck, before I even travelled on it I couldn’t wait for it to roll into my town! I’m excited, nervous, and found myself pacing any room that I entered weeks before the show. Getting to Pomona a few days early to get ready for this gig has allowed me to bump into friends from Warped Tour past. It’s like a punk rock summer camp if you really think about it. Bonds are formed between people, no matter if your staff or an artist, and if were lucky the great many people here come back again the next!

Now it’s June 26th. I’m in Pomona, CA. Rehearsal day has come and gone (with Kevin Lyman addressing all the staff and giving some summer touring advice like “drink water, not vodka!”) and it was time for the first brave punk rock crusaders to make a mad dash to the famed Vans’ blowup schedule. You could feel the excitement a mile a way... and I’m not kidding! Just wait till you see the line in the pics! You’ll know what I’m talking about minutes before doors open at YOUR show. Before I knew it... the time had come. Doors were about to open for Warped Tour!

So what did I do this morning to settle all my pre-warped anxiety? Well I went straight to the action of course! I had a feeling there would be a stampede this morning and boy was I right on that call! The kids went crazy the second the bullhorns sounded the words “Go enjoy Warped Tour!”, kids of all ages rushed right by me. The very first band to play inside the venue of Warped (as our good friends at the Family Stage entertain the lines before everyone gets in) was Attack! Attack!, and they killed it! I was still getting my bearings straight and checked out all Warped Tour had to offer and believe me, you’re going to be seeing some crazy stuff here this summer. In the mean time check out the shots in the photo gallery! Maybe you might even see yourself there! We’ll be in a town near you before you know it!

As always, this blog is your blog so tell me what you want to see! Got a question that you’ve been dying to ask NOFX? Want to know why Nat from 3OH3! turned down medical school to live the rock star life? Well I’m your blogger and you know where to find me! See you in the pit folks! (for reals... come say hi! :-D)

A Warped History

Posted on June 23, 2009 at 02:17 PM

Can you feel it?!?! Warped is less than a few days away! The music! The mosh pits! Autograph signings and merch! THE SWEAT! It’s all about to happen folks and it’s right around the corner!!!

So get this... this is the 15th year of Warped Tour! FIFTEEN!!! That means this tour started when most of you were in diapers! So how can we celebrate this beloved birthday before the kickoff? With a trip down memory lane of course!

It all started in the year 1995. Kevin Lyman, founder and executive producer of the Warped Tour, came up with this crazy idea... having a nationwide concert that fused extreme sports, great music, and a sense of community within the music scene like no other. Lyman was putting on rock shows for years at local clubs and even helped produce other festivals like Lollapalooza. Passionate with a dream, he decided to throw all his cards in. Shortly after he was set on making this happen, Lyman made a few calls, and BAM! Warped Tour was born.

In it’s first year, Warped hit up over 25 cities across the United States, playing for about 2,500 kids at their biggest show. (Compared to the 20,000 or so fans we have on average today!) Having bands like L7, No Use For A Name, and Sublime all out tour together was unheard of at the time. These bands attracted a diverse crowd from all across different music genres. Promotors saw potential and wanted the Warped Tour to happen again.

The following year, a guy named Steve Van Doren, known for heading the coolest company that made a waffle iron inspired sneaker cool, decided he wanted to be a part of this. Vans, makers of the classic slip on sneaker and the inspiration behind all things fashionably checkered, decided that he would sponsor the Warped Tour. Viola! Now it’s all making sense isn’t it?

(Fun trivia fact by the way... the first Warped Tour was just the Warped Tour! It only became the Vans Warped after the second going!)

Then year after year, the impossible happened. Punk rock, metal, rap, and other alternative music genres, that no one in their right mind would ever have thought to be at the same concert event, brought together fans from all across the world! Fast foreword to 2009 and Warped Tour proudly boasts the title of North America’s longest running touring festival. And it doesn't plan to stop anytime soon.

To think it all started with a dream.

So what do you think folks??? Are you excited to be a part of history? Have anything you want to share about being a Warped Veteran? I’m not the only one that can get these readers psyched up! If you’ve been here before... let’s hear it! What does Warped Tour mean to you and why are you going this year? Share those memories!

Hello Blog Readers!!!

Posted on June 16, 2009 at 06:14 PM

Hello fellow Warped-Tourians! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Steve Guttbinder and I will be your Kia Warped Tour blogger for the summer of 2009! My job is to get you up close and personal with EVERYTHING that goes on here at Warped!!! Expect to hear everything from what life is like on the road for your favorite artists to how something as unbelievable as Warped Tour even happens in the first place! This blog is for YOU, so if you want me to get the 411 on something just let me know in the comments!

I figured since we’re going to be spending A LOT of time here together, it would only be appropriate for me to give you a little background as to who I am. For starters, I’m about to turn 21 this summer (Cincinnati, get ready!!!) and was born and raised in the Big Apple, New York City! I love technology and being in the know about what’s going on in the world is kind of my thing. I have a little website called Word of Steve that pretty much sums up all the fun stuff I do when I'm not touring around the country with Warped. This is going to be my third summer traveling on the Warped Tour and second as a blogger... AND I AM STOKED!!! I can’t wait to give you my side of what goes on there!

So what’s my story anyways and how did I get so lucky as to be on the Warped Tour???  Well it all started some eight years ago when I went to my very first Warped Tour in 2002. Mind you this is back when Drive Thru Records and Good Charlotte were just coming on to the scene! I had the time of my life that day; I mean where else can you see all your favorite bands in one place, in one day, for the low low ticket price of just $25 dollars! I was hooked. After my fourth outing, I made it a point to one day work on the tour and here I am!  Eight years down the line and it STILL gets better with each and every show.

So there you have it folks! That’s me in a nutshell! I’m looking forward to seeing ALL of you out there this summer and can’t wait to bring you the best stories I can! I’ll be posting updates EVERY day so stay tuned! If there’s any thing you want to see here... just let me know in the comments and I’ll make it happen! See you in the pit folks!
