Why a whole blog about Andrew McMahon?

Posted on December 10, 2007 at 05:16 PM

Because I can write a whole blog about Andrew McMahon. I have the power to do so. So I finally picked upAndrew1 a copy of this month's AP, with the piano pounder himself on the cover. For any of you rock kids that aren't aware, Alternative Press releases an issue at the end of each year with their most anticipated albums for the following year. A lot of good stuff coming out next year, from Rise Against to Alkaline Trio to a little album by Andrew himself. So check that out.

Anyway, this blog isn't about that issue specifically (although the article was rad & well written), but rather about the fact my life is basically set to a soundtrack mainly consisting of Something Corporate and Jacks and Andrew's voice in general. I remember the first time I heard SoCo, it was late 2000 and was listening to some of ready...break. I was thirteen. If any of you haven't turned thirteen yet, I recommend never turning thirteen because it will probably be one of the worst years of your life. Haha. Anyway, I remember the anticipation before Audioboxer came out on Drive-Thru and the way Punk Rock Princess played through my head in math class. It was a monumental album, and like The Starting Line, Something Corporate (with a little help from Jordan of NFG) pioneered the pop-punk genre.

It wasn't until years later that I got to see them live, in 2004. I remember feeling like that day couldn't come soon enough - a culmination of the past four years - because it was SoCo, then a Jimmy Eat World andAndrew2 Taking Back Sunday show in the same day. My friend and I (license less) had my mom drive us to Ithaca and back in one day to see them, then we went to school the next day. From then on, those three bands represented a huge piece of me and the soundtrack of my life. As I was ending my highschool career in 2005, the news of Andrew McMahon's new side project was coming to light and I was excited about it. Soon after we learned of the tragic diagnosis of leukemia, and we know the story from there.

When Andrew's leukemia went into remission, and he played a show at Irving Plaza, and I couldn't help but think how much my life had began to mirror the ups and downs of his. With his triumph over disease came my own triumph - finishing my first year of college! I was lucky enough to meet him for the first time that day, and I know Fuse was there documenting it too. He's a special guy, dedicated to doing what so many bands forget to do now - make music! Having met him twice, seen JM three times, and seen SoCo once, I feel very connected to him & his music. That aside, I do really wish that the anticipated album was from Something Corporate. It would make me feel like everything had come full circle. But I'm sure the Jack's album will be rockin'. So for any of you guys who love Andrew, this blog is for you :)

k, no offense Maggie, but I don't really like you writing in this blog. It's called Steven's Untitled Rock Blog and you're not Steven. I even got confused at first when I was reading this since I thought Steven wrote it and I was like "wait, no way is he only 20". Anyways I just think that if you blog, you should do it someplace else. Like I don't recall any other interns writing here and that 1st guy who started the bulletins was awesome.

Hooray! I was a little confused and thought this would be a Steven blog, but I read it anyways. I totally understand where you're coming from and I love Andrew McMahon, he's such an amazing person and such an inspiration. Thanks for the blog!
