HAPPY HOLYDAZE

Posted on December 20, 2007 at 04:32 PM

Sitting at home post sinus surgery listening to Radiohead.
My head actually feels like a big radio. It's the bloody cough I like so much.

I wanted to wish each and every one you the happiest of holidays from me and the whole Untitled Rock Show team.

All of you are truly the greatest gift we could ask for.

See you in 2008! And it's indeed going to GREAT.

love,
Steven

december endings... and the intern's last day @ fuse.

Posted on December 13, 2007 at 04:48 PM

hey rock kids,

So I'm posting this blog... anyway, today's a little sad, because it's the last day of my internship here at Fuse... I am definitely going to miss being here, it's so cool to be able to get this type of experience. I have met a lot of really cool people and the times I've had at Fuse will definitely be some of my fondest. From meeting Jimmy Eat World to going on-location to shoot an interview with Mick Jones and Tony James, the Rock Show has really given me a lot of cool times!

I got a lot of cool gifts from people at Fuse today, but Steven wound up beating everyone by indulging my Jimmy Eat World geekdom further, a signed 7" split with Mineral and Sense Field. And a Jets To Brazil pin, old-school. My producers and production manager Whitney gave me a lot of cool stuff as well. I was so stoked, especially they've already given me so much by just letting me intern here :)

But it's not all sad, kids! I will still be rocking steady to the beat in my head (oh oh oh) until I fall down dead in the pit... you can keep up with me at my website (www.maggister.com), which is currently under construction, but ya know. When it gets up, I'll have lots and lots of concert pictures from all your favorite Rock Show bands (Paramore, TSL, Jack's Mannequin, AFI, etc, etc)... and maybe a few extra if you're lucky :)

SURS is going dark the next few weeks, which means we (they! omgzzz) won't be taping, but there ARE new episodes next week, one with Handsome Dick Manitoba and the other with Sam Riley of the new Joy Division biopic, "Control". GREAT times. It's time for me to end this thing here we call the bulletin. It's my last, at least for now... but KEEP ON ROCKIN!

Why a whole blog about Andrew McMahon?

Posted on December 10, 2007 at 05:16 PM

Because I can write a whole blog about Andrew McMahon. I have the power to do so. So I finally picked upAndrew1 a copy of this month's AP, with the piano pounder himself on the cover. For any of you rock kids that aren't aware, Alternative Press releases an issue at the end of each year with their most anticipated albums for the following year. A lot of good stuff coming out next year, from Rise Against to Alkaline Trio to a little album by Andrew himself. So check that out.

Anyway, this blog isn't about that issue specifically (although the article was rad & well written), but rather about the fact my life is basically set to a soundtrack mainly consisting of Something Corporate and Jacks and Andrew's voice in general. I remember the first time I heard SoCo, it was late 2000 and was listening to some of ready...break. I was thirteen. If any of you haven't turned thirteen yet, I recommend never turning thirteen because it will probably be one of the worst years of your life. Haha. Anyway, I remember the anticipation before Audioboxer came out on Drive-Thru and the way Punk Rock Princess played through my head in math class. It was a monumental album, and like The Starting Line, Something Corporate (with a little help from Jordan of NFG) pioneered the pop-punk genre.

It wasn't until years later that I got to see them live, in 2004. I remember feeling like that day couldn't come soon enough - a culmination of the past four years - because it was SoCo, then a Jimmy Eat World andAndrew2 Taking Back Sunday show in the same day. My friend and I (license less) had my mom drive us to Ithaca and back in one day to see them, then we went to school the next day. From then on, those three bands represented a huge piece of me and the soundtrack of my life. As I was ending my highschool career in 2005, the news of Andrew McMahon's new side project was coming to light and I was excited about it. Soon after we learned of the tragic diagnosis of leukemia, and we know the story from there.

When Andrew's leukemia went into remission, and he played a show at Irving Plaza, and I couldn't help but think how much my life had began to mirror the ups and downs of his. With his triumph over disease came my own triumph - finishing my first year of college! I was lucky enough to meet him for the first time that day, and I know Fuse was there documenting it too. He's a special guy, dedicated to doing what so many bands forget to do now - make music! Having met him twice, seen JM three times, and seen SoCo once, I feel very connected to him & his music. That aside, I do really wish that the anticipated album was from Something Corporate. It would make me feel like everything had come full circle. But I'm sure the Jack's album will be rockin'. So for any of you guys who love Andrew, this blog is for you :)

Two punk LEGENDS.

Posted on December 5, 2007 at 04:35 PM

B00005gsjs09lzzzzzzz Okay so we are getting ready for our huge shoot tomorrow with Mick Jones (The Clash, Big Audio Dynamite) and Tony James (Generation X). These guys are the REASON the music we play on SURS is getting attention these days. You know it. I have a Big Audio Dynamite story. I have two friends, Cat and Alice. We lived together for a little while.Mick_jones Alice is a HUGE Mick Jones aficionado, in fact, she is what we call a FREAK. Anyway, we're hanging out in the Bronx, you know, like usual (errr...) and we all go into a Salvation Army, noticing some choice fuzzy purple pants or one of those great thrift store finds. Well, the pants were a size 34 but we did find something else. And that is Big Audio Dynamite's cassette from '91. 50 cents, I think was what she paid for it. Woo. Memories. I think it is going to be so cool to see what these dudes are up to, and furthermore, to be in their presence! Yikes. I bet Steven is going to act like a little girl at a Hanson show circa '97.

Speaking of Hanson, there are a select few of us here at the Fuse offices that know no matter your musical200pxhansonsnowed_in_2 preferences, this time of year is not complete without their essential 1998 Christmas album "Snowed In". No matter what you may be drinking (COCOA, not whiskey) or what you may be decorating your apartment with (plastic reindeer horns?)... the holiday season does not begin until this album is played. FINAL ANSWER. Their version of Baby Please Come Home is the best thing I've ever heard in my life. Speaking of cheesy christmas music, I put on All-4-One's version of The First Noel last night, let me just say, that's nostalgia. The nineties were a time of their own...

Will Smith didn't need to take us out of the 90s with Willenium, 5ive will reunite... Yes this is the rock blog, but no, I never said I don't unashamedly love 90s pop. Your mom probably liked it, so don't trash it.

Carbon/Curtis

Posted on December 4, 2007 at 03:30 PM

Wassup Rockers it's Steven and it's not Thursday.
I know, doy.  But usually I send out a bulletin on Thursdays.  It's my thing.
Last week was a rough week, as you all know, and our hearts and thoughts are still with Casey Calvert and his family. You have all been incredibly supportive and I know how much it means to them.

I wanted to take a moment to talk about what's happening next week on the ol'Untitled. We are interviewing a band called Carbon/Silicon. You may not have heard of them but you know the men behind it, Mr. Tony James and Mr. Mick Jones.

Tony James was in a punk band called Generation X most notably known for it's lead singer Billy Idol. Mick Jones' pedigree consists of two groups, Big Audio Dynamite, and a little band called The Clash. We here at the Rock Show are so awestruck to have these two titans of rock that we can barely contain ourselves. I think I wet myself just a little right now.

We're taping that show next Thursday and tomorrow we're interviewing an actor named Sam Riley who played Ian Curtis in the Joy Division biopic Control. It's a pretty damn cool week. I look forward to hearing what you think.

until then and always,

Steven

Maggie finally posts to the rockblog.

Posted on December 3, 2007 at 02:21 PM

WHOA. NO WAY.

Yeah, way. They finally gave me an invite to this... I guess two weeks before my internship ENDS is better than nothing, yes, rocklings? So this coming weekend I was totally supposed to go see Bayside in Albany, but I found out the show starts at 7, making it impossible to get there from NYC in time to make it. Bummer. I might still try and go late, we'll see. They're rad. Tomorrow night I'm going to see Ted Leo + The Pharmacists,Tedleo they're playing kinda near my 'hood, in Williamsburg. I live in Bushwick, but it's as close as shows get :) I LOVE THEM. I had a ticket to a show of theirs in Albany on the night before my 2005 high school graduation  (taking place at 9:30 am) and my brother wound up flaking out on me, leaving me with no ride and two tickets. Real cool. Moral of the story is that you shouldn't buy tickets to a show unless you're pretty sure your brother is actually going to follow through on his promises. THANKS GAVIN.

Moving on, guess who I did see last week? PARAMORE (Pa-ra-mer as Steven pronounces it) and THE STARTING LINE. So so so good. I can't even express how happy I was to get to see this sold out show. I've seen TSL five times now, and Paramore twice (the first time was at Warped so it wasn't a full set really). Hayley is so cute. I don't understand how one gets so adorable. I have a girl fan crush on her, for sure. Speaking of crushes, Kenny Vasoli cut his hair and I love it. So much better... hehe.

Also, what do you guys think about tattoos? I am supposed to be getting inked (for the first time) sometime in February with a friend. I'm scarrrreddd. Also I don't want it to be too overwhelming on me, I'm kinda short and a girl so I'm not really going for the whole "full sleeves and chest piece". Planning on getting the 180pxthursdaylogoThursday dove and the Jimmy Eat World headphones, both small and black, on my shoulder blades. I really wanted a Jets To Brazil inspired tattoo, but nothing really stands out to me at the moment. If any of you love them as much as I do, give me some ideas to go on. I'm probably going to wind up drawing something of my own or wait to get that one. I know I'll cry like a little baby when I get them, but it seems worth it!

Hey and my last thing is about a band I am really good friends with, called The Loyalty. They are based out of my hometown, Queensbury, NY. That's near Saratoga Springs, upstate. They have had a really successful year and I just want you all to check out what they've been doing, give their songs a listen. Tell me what you think. They are going to be huge, I promise you.
