FAV-O5-RITES

Posted on December 29, 2005 at 11:46 AM

My turn!  As the holidaze continue I would like to add to my compatriots lists of some of my favorte concerts of 2005.  And between the three of us, there are a lot to choose from.

5)  The Loved Ones at the Warehouse Next Door in DC.  This was my first Loved Ones show with about 40 people in attendance and they rocked it like an arena.  I was completely and utterly smitten with the band.  I can't wait for their full-length release on Fat Wreck Chords in February.

4) Against Me! at Webster Hall in NYC.  ProBrucer and most of the Untitled Team were there.  I see a lot of shows, none as good as this.  Baby bands have a lot to learn.  These guys are good teachers.

3) U2 at Madison Square Garden.  I saw them twice there this year.  The first time was in August and my first U2 show ever (I know, I know) and I wasn't impressed.  The second time I went, I got it.  They're shows are a religious experience, I pray you get to go to one.

2) Green Day live at the Fuse Studios.  In the same room where we shoot our little rock show, Green Day played their last show for the American Idiot tour for an intimate audience.  Now, the best part of the show was not aired.  Best part for me anyway.  It was during soundcheck.  They had just finished going through Who Wrote Holden Caufield off of Kerplunk and I decided to shout out a request.  Why the hell not?  I yelled One of My Lies, which is the first song I ever heard by Green Day and my favorite still.  Billie Joe laughed, looked over at the rhythm guitar player and launched into it.  I didn't even need to see the rest of the show, as my best friend said to me after they finished, "I'm good.  I can go home."

1) Rocket From the Crypt's final show in New York ever at the Hard Rock Cafe.  They are, were, the greatest live band ever.  A DVD should be coming out for their last show in the world in their hometown of San Diego.  Please buy and cry for what you may have missed.  I will.

-Steven

'05 Favorites Cont.

Posted on December 23, 2005 at 02:19 PM

Needless to say, it's been a crazy week in New York City, what with the transit strike an all.  Even though we didn't have the time to blog them, during the long carpools and cold walks we've been brainstorming more of our 2005 favorites to share.  I hope in your spare time, you've been doing the same.

I'd like to continue this week with my Top 5 Favorite Videos released in '05

5.) Death Cab for Cutie - "Soul Meets Body" - (We got to see it here before the musical notes had been inserted. I thought it looked so beautiful.  Then I saw the full version and it nearly made me cry.)

4.) The Honorary Title - "Everything I Once Had" - (Speaking of videos that made me want to cry...this one did too.  The falling feathers were awesome, but I'd hate to have been the person who had to clean them up.)

3.) Bright Eyes - "At The Bottom Of Everything" - (We just got this video recently and everyone at the office had their mouths open when it played. I love how perfectly literal it is... oh and when the young man makes out with the old woman.)

2.) LeTigre - "After Dark" - (I don't know that we ever actually play this video on FUSE, but it is almost unhealthy how much I love LeTigre and I've watched "After Dark" on their website enough to crash the server...Haha!)

1.) Interpol - "Evil" - (I have a photo of Norman, the puppet sitting next to my desk.  If I was made of fluff, Norman would be in trouble. Is it wrong to have a crush on a doll?)

Alright, now that I've shared my puppet fantasies and what makes me cry, I think it is time for the rest of you to do the same.  ProBrucer? Steven? You readers?

Top 5 in '05!

Posted on December 15, 2005 at 06:42 PM

As 2005 comes to an end Steven, ProBrucer and I would like to share some of our favorite musical moments, albums and videos of the past year.  Check back continually over the next few weeks as each of us  update our  countdowns to include everything from our personal favorite SURS episodes to which CD's we're just itching to hear in '06.  Feel free to post your own lists in the comment section. We'd love to hear what you loved most this year!

Alright, here goes!

(drumroll, please)

GirlAtTheRockShow's TOP 5 ALBUMS RELEASED IN '05:

5. Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning (okay, it's not my favorite Connor album of all time, but it still blew my mind)

4. Wilco - Kicking Television (this is my favorite band of all time, but it's a live album so it can't be number one)

3. Nightmare Of You - Self-Titled (c'mon on, you all know this one is on your lists)

2. Biology - Making Moves (um, i listen to this album almost every day.  okay, everyday <3)

1. The Decemberists - Picaresque (the only band that can make a six minute song about being stuck in the belly of a whale played with an accordian cool - so cool in fact, that it is my number one!)

Okay, so I tried to make a list of the top 5 albums I was looking forward to in '06, but honestly only one record came to mind...

...Brand New!!! (i really don't know how much longer i can wait...)

Okay, so the stage has been set. It's your turn!  And stay tuned, because there will be more to follow...from me, from Steven, from ProBrucer, and most importantly, from you!

Mittens on Kittens

Posted on December 12, 2005 at 12:08 PM

Hola Amigos and Amigas, it's that time again, holiday time, and you know how I loves the holydaze.  Now we at Rock Central are going to be posting long and deep, far and wide about our favortie things from 2005, yes indeedy.  But I wanted to take a mo' to suggest a few holiday items from bands I like, who are no longer with us.  No, they're not dead, just broken up.  Here's a few of my favorite things:

ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT  - Scream, Dracula, Scream

This one's a no-brainer.  If you've ever watched the show you know how big a fan I am and how they sadly, ended their fifteen year reign and as the GREATEST live band in the world this past Halloween in their hometown of San Diego.  This is the record that turned me on to them.  Forever.

GUIDED BY VOICES - Alien Lanes

From Dayton, Ohio, don't even bother trying to decide what record to get, they've got a few.  The brainchild of former elementary school teacher Rob Pollard, GBV is one of the most prolific bands to ever grace a record player.  They played their last gig in Chicago, New Year's Eve 2004.   ProBrucer and I went to their last show in New York.  For those of who've seen them live know how magical they were.  This is a record with a vast number of hits, but oh, they have so many more.

MINOR THREAT - Out of Step

If you dare call yourself punk and you don't have this record (or Minor Threat Complete Discography) then you have shamed yourself and your family.  This is the record that changed my life.  Before I heard Minor Threat I was listening to Bon Jovi.  No lie.  Out of Step opened doors in my head and shaped me into the person I am today.  Absolute legend.

RAMONES - Leave Home

You can't wrong with a Ramones record, well, any record up to Too Tough to Die, in my opinion.  Most folks will say buy their self-titled debut. I say, grab the reissue of this, their second opus.  You'll be shocked how many of the songs you know and you'll finally have validity to wearing that Ramones T-shirt you bought at Hot Topic.  It's the Ramones people.  Everyone should have an album.

FUGAZI -  13 Songs or The Argument

You see, this is a toss up. If I was going to turn someone onto the great Fugazi, who sadly are on indefinite hiatus, I would suggest their first record, 13 Songs. But.  Their final output, The Argument is such an amazing record and really shows an evolution in their sound.  Fugazi are truly one of the most important bands.  Ever.  A friend of mine once described Fugazi as the band you could play at any party and everyone would be happy.

JAWBREAKER - 24 Hour Revenge Therapy

Do I really need to say anything further about this band? I mean, seriously, aside from being my favorite band, they are just amazing songwriters, powerful players, and sorely, sorely missed.  Revenge Therapy doesn't have a bad song on it.  I can't recommend it enough.  This was the first record I looked forward to buying from them after I became a fan.  I had gotten their first two albums at a show I saw in a church in DC for five bucks.  Well, I bought their first record Unfun and my best friend bought their second Bivouac (also phenomenal) because we didn't have enough money between us to buy both each.  Punk rock, people.  If your friends are into any of the music we play on the show and they don't have a Jawbreaker record, you will make their holiday season.  OH, you will.

And there you have it kids  Couple things I dig.  Some music I like.  Some bands, who sadly, are no longer with us, but their influence shall resonate with you forever.  Trust me, I know from what I speak.

Happy Holidays.

Your friend,

Steven
