Ladies and Gentlemen, put your hands together for Rocket From the Crypt, one last time!!!
You've heard me talk about it, you've seen me write about it, you've seen their emblem emblazened on my chest and belt buckle,
now I ask you all to please, bow your heads as tonight, after 16 years as a band, Rocket From the Crypt give their farewell performance in their hometown of San Diego, California, on their favorite night of the year. Tonight, the gods will weep.
But this was not their only performance this year of 2005, nay, my friends and believers, Rocket From the Crypt graced our souls here on the East Coast this past Friday. Through the kindness and generosity of Mr. Little Steven Van Zandt (and his wallet) Rocket From the Crypt played the new Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square New York. You bet your sweet ass I was there.
It was a late one, my friends. We arrived promptly at 6 PM. Doors were scheduled to open at 8 with two opening bands, one of which, flew all the way from Oslo, Norway to play their final performance. Gluecifer they are called, and they too, like RFTC, hold high the torch of rock and roll. Though their flame extinguished, I was happy to be part of their good-bye. I don't know how to say farewell in Norwegian, I'm sure it sounds airy and full of consonants, but I do know how to say it in French (how I hate the French,) and it fits, Aur Revoir Gluecifer, until we rock again.
I mentioned we arrived at 6 PM, course I did, it's right up there, look, you can see it, and read it again if you like, note the smooth font. We got to the Hard Rock at 6 PM and through our sheer force of will and an open door walked right into soundcheck for our heroes Rocket From the Crypt.
There were naught but five, maybe ten people milling about, and there they were onstage, prepping for what would become one spectacular night. You could feel it, you really could. I still do.
Fast forward to 11:30 in the PM when Gluecifer were finally getting on. I mentioned doors were at 8, now Rocket was slated to play in the 11:30 time slot, but things happen folks. Sometimes rock and roll ain't pretty (have you seen Lemmy?) The whole evening was pushed back, there were three opening bands, including Gluecifer, and some rather lengthy transitions. It happens.
One high note, you all know the song Monster Mash, right? Well, Mr. Bobby "Boris" Pickett, the man who wrote it and recorded it showed up and performed it live. Pretty cool? Cool can't describe when Rocket went on.
It was 1:30 AM, technically October 29th, Rocket From the Crypt took the stage, introduced by Handsome Dick Manitoba of the Dictators, and commenced the rock and roll onslaught they are known for. If you're like me, and I know some of you are, the power of a live concert is like church, it moves you, it raises you up when you're down, sanctifies your being, and perforates your ear drums. That description barely scratches the surface.
Wearing wild man of Borneo thatched skirt outfits, Speedo, Petey X, the Notorious ND, Apollo 9, JC 2000, and Ruby Mars, took the stage, tore it up, pissed on it, burned it to the ground, raised the roof, blew the walls off the joint, in short, they rocked. Hard.
With ringmaster Speedo at the helm enticing the crowd, making us laugh, giving a sermon on the power of music, their set ran the gamut of all their
records from Paint as a Fragrance and Circa Now, to All Systems Go, favoring RFTC and the immortal Scream, Dracula, Scream! Non-STOP rock and roll action! Kids, I've seen U2, I've seen Red Hot Chili Peppers, I've seen Green Day, I have never seen a band own it more than Rocket From the Crypt. They are, were, the greatest live band ever. It was over two hours of bliss people! They came, we saw, they rocked, they left, we wept. I know I did.
My friends, I feel sorry for you, I sincerely do, most of you will never know the power of the greatest live band ever. Many of you have never even heard of them but those who watch the show know how I feel and I implore, go buy one of their records. Any of them. You won't be disappointed. I promise.
You guys in San Diego are in for a real treat tonight. No tricks at all. Just balls out rock and roll. I envy you. Give them a holler for me. And give it up for the band.
Rocket From the Crypt
RIP
I miss you dearly.
your fan,
Steven

As we told you on tonight's episode, Midtown's drummer Rob Hitt is proprietor of a record label called i-surrender, along with his partner Alex Sarti. The next project dropping from i-surrender HQ is from a band called Valencia, who I was lucky enough to catch when they played at Trash in Brooklyn last summer.
Valencia's debut full-length release This Could Be A Possibility drops on October 25, but you can preview (or preorder) their music through any number of the links below. Go check it out - you won't be sorry.

For more information about i-surrender and the rest of their roster, check them out their website and/or add them as your MySpace friend for regular updates!

As always, thanks for watching, and thanks for rocking!

In one of the comments to an earlier post on the blog, someone mentioned our performance episode with The Used, and lamented that they couldn't find a picture of Jeph's cool new dagger bassist Jeph Howard had inked onto his hands. Well, ask and you shall receive!
I took these when I worked with Jeph and Bert on the Rockzilla Viewers' Poll show a few months back because I thought the tattoo was freakin' amazing.
He's had some touch-ups done to it by now, but this gives you a pretty good idea of how rad it is. Next time I see him and I have my camera with me, I'll be sure to snap an update for y'all!
Cheers,
ProBRUCEr

OK, so he's not actually broke. But BROKE is the name of the band that Branden produced in his own Unknown Studios, who were recently signed to Maverick Records! You can check out that band's site at www.brokemusic.net.
Branden will be working with the band on their major label debut when The Used finish their tour this winter, but he's also on the lookout for other bands to work with at Unknown - maybe even YOURS!
If you're in a band (or know someone who is) and you'd like to work with Branden on his home turf, then burn a disc of your music and send it along to:
Demos for Branden
P.O. Box 970518
Orem, UT 84097
Spread the word, send in your music, and maybe you or your friends will get Used by Mr. Steineckert!
Cheers,
ProBRUCEr

We've been insanely busy the past few weeks lining up a month chocked full of couch visits from some of your favorite bands, downloads to satisfy even the penniless (they're free!) and a full week of on-location episodes from the Nintendo Fusion Tour! As a result, our October episodes started off with a bang yesterday as COHEED & CAMBRIA stopped by the studio for their first visit. If you missed last night's premiere, don't worry, you still have time to catch the encore today at 4pm EST. And if for some reason you miss that one, I'm sure we'll be able to work a little something out and replay it again in the next few weeks. We wouldn't want you to miss out. On that note, read up my friends! You don't want to miss any of the excitement in the coming weeks!
October 4th (Today!): AGAINST ME! stop by the studio and offer up a download of "Don't Lose Touch!"
October 5th: We're hooking you up with "Tell Me Everything" off JUST SURRENDER'S album If These Streets Could Talk!
October 11th: The boys of UNDEROATH pile into the studio to show Steven a little love!
October 14th: We are "Alive With The Glory of Love" because we snagged this SAY ANYTHING download!
October 17th-19th: Catch the special encores of our WEEZER, FOO FIGHTERS and MAE episodes from on the road!
October 21st: Steven will be in his glory as the legendary SOCIAL DISTORTION join him in the SURS studio!
October 24th-28th: We spend the entire week with the bands of the Nintendo Fusion Tour (FALL OUT BOY, MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK, THE STARTING LINE, BOYS NIGHT OUT & PANIC! AT THE DISCO)!
October 31st: In honor of my birthday (okay, maybe not), COPELAND pay their first visit to the studio.
As always, for downloads and all things related to SURS, visit www.fuse.tv/steven

I recently came across your blog and have been reading about trauma therapy. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
