When they were in our studio a few weeks ago, From Autumn to Ashes drummer Francis Mark and bassist Josh Newton spoke of their new project, BIOLOGY. Their first CD, "Making Moves" drops tomorrow (September 27th) on Vagrant Records and your SURS homework for the week is GO BUY THIS RECORD!!!
Recorded over a year ago with producer Brian McTernan (Thrice, Hot Water Music, Circa Survive), this record features Fran on vocals/guitar, Brian on bass, Josh on guitar and Cornbread Compton from Engine Down on drums.
The cover art was actually painted by Fran, in addition to several other pieces inside the booklet (hint hint - buy the actual CD, not just the itunes version). I promise you won't be disappointed. With influences like Sonic Youth, Violent Femmes, Interpol and ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, how can you go wrong? You can't. And be sure to check out song #8, "Born Again Virgins." (It is my favorite.)
Oh yes. And if you want to study for your assignment, check out:

Hey kids, Steven at your service soy un Perdidor, so why dontcha kill me? Been awhiles muchachos. Lots going on. We've barely had a moment to rest und relax but today is that day. Well, actually this week is that day as our own proBrucer is on vacay in merry ole England, while the GirlAtThe UntitledRockShow and myself are here in sweaty ole Manhattan. Course she's at Fuse HQ while I'm at home listening to the Riverboat Gamblers Tour EP with my cat sitting precariously on the edge of my desk.
Quite a mouthful.
By now, you've seen the Foozer/Wee Fighters tour shows, hope you dug'em. We certainly dug shooting them. Quite a fast trip that was. Seriously, we took off the morning of the show, hit the ground running, shot the interviews, shot the shows, crashed at the hotel, got the next morning and flew back to NYC. Rockstars we are. Rockstars we are all.
So, you wanna see some pictures? OKAY!
This band is called Weezer. Their logo is a homage to what great 80's hard rock band? C'mon, you know you know.
Here's another shot. I like this one. It's green. Which isn't easy.
This guy is Rivers. He likes to rock. But sometimes he does this guy's job. His name is Pat. It's the next picture down. You should scroll to it. That's right. Scroll
There's Pat. He's playing the drums. Drums are cool. Sometimes though Pat likes to switch is up and play guitar (pronounced GEE-tar - tar is in cigarettes and cigarettes aren't good for you) Hey, this is what Pat looks like playing GEE-tar. Way to go Pat!
Ever what Rivers would look like playing drums? Well, wonder no more!
Photo's kind of crappy though. They can't all be good. But this one of guitarist Brian is pretty cool. I think, anyway. Course, I'm biased. It's my camera.
We're missing somebody. That's right, our bass player Scott. He's a neat dude. I saw him outside a comic book store in LA once. He's got a weird silver thing on one of his teeth. I don't have a picture of that but you can imagine it. Here he is rocking out with Pat. Pretty rockin'.
And that's Weezer kids. Pretty damn good show. I was utterly impressed and I've seen them before. If you don't have tickets to the show with the Foos. Get some. Foo Fighters rocked hard as well. My pictures just weren't as good. Maybe next time.
Alright. Stay groovy my peoples.
your friend Steven

On August 24, 2003, Taking Back Sunday shot their video for "You're So Last Summer" in Brooklyn, NY. ProBRUCEr was there. Even though he wasn't ProBRUCEr yet...just Bruce.
OK, I'll stop referring to myself in the third person now and get on with my recollections. Here's a shot of some of the extras who came by to participate in the shoot - perhaps some of them now viewers of our little rock show!
Even though the shoot ended up running longer than anticipated, everyone was all smiles - especially early on in the shoot, when I made Matt & Adam say "cheese." I guess Eddie was out of earshot...
Here's a great action shot. Flava Flav looks a little bit out of it for some reason. Hmmmmmm...what could it be? Let's just say that he probably wasn't going over the lyrics to the song during the hour or two he spent sitting in his limo on site. Actually, he definitely wasn't going over lyrics, 'cause he didn't seem to know more than a word or two once the cameras started rolling! But hey - he's Flava frickin' Flav. He can get by with just dancing and yelling "Yeeeeeaaaaah, boyee!"
This next one reveals that in his spare time, Flava Flav is also The Human Torch. Believe it or not, this photo was not retouched, nor was it framed for this effect. I just got lucky while snapping away that Flav's hands were centered in the halo of those lights.
For this next one, I'll take Billy Joel's advice and leave a tender moment alone.
You saw some dice-playing in the music video, but that wasn't actually part of the original plan. During production breaks, so many dice and dollar bills came out that the director took advantage of the behind-the-scenes flavor and rolled on it. Here, Matt and Adam engage in a little downtime gambling.
But our other friends continued on with the Cee-Lo game, even while the band was toiling away on stage.
Another fun day from yet another summer. I'm getting so nostalgic this week! The TBS guys are recording in LA as I type this, so hopefully I'll be on set of their next clip and can get some more snaps to share with all of you in blog-land!
Cheers,
ProBRUCEr

Now that Vans Warped Tour has been wrapped up for a couple weeks, I thought I'd post a bunch of pics I hadn't previously shared with you blog readers! This whole set is from our shoot days in California around the 4th of July holiday weekend.
You regular viewers of SURS might look at these first couple of snapshots and say, "Hey, wait - I don't remember anyone from No Doubt appearing on the rock show!" Well, you are correct!
On day one of our Warped adventure (in Long Beach), however, another Fuse producer (hello, Emma!) was shooting a Warped Wednesday edition with Tom and Adrian, so Steven and I steamrolled over to get a quick segment in the can for Daily Download.
After we finished with them, we moved on to our scheduled interview with our amazing friends Motion City Soundtrack. We had wrapped up our segments with Steven and were shooting some fan Q&A segments for our post-Warped wrap up shows, when - in the blink of an eye - Mark Hoppus sprinted right into the interview! Here he is after having scattered the assembled masses like a moped through a flock of pigeons.
A couple days later, we rolled into lovely Ventura for a full day of shooting, including a run-in with Street Drum Corps, with whom Steven also did a quickie segment for Daily Download.
Is it just me, or does Bert seem puzzled? I should have explained to him that STEVEN was conducting the interview, not his S.T.U.N.-ning Corps-mate Bobby!
One of our highest-rated episodes this summer was the hour we spent with Gerard, Frank, and Mikey from My Chemical Romance. Here you can see our Fuse teammate Jake (on loan from Uranium for the holiday weekend) shooting second camera of the interview.
This next one's a favorite of mine, because Ben from Armor For Sleep and Chris from The Explosion were both good friends (and one a former roommate) of mine before I ever worked at Fuse, but they had never actually hung out together (even though they're both Jersey boys) until this evening in Ventura. One more step in my ongoing mission to bring the world together, two rockers at a time...
I just love this one for the disparity of expressions on the faces of Tony from Motion City Soundtrack and Jon from The Matches - not to mention a completely faceless blonde woman! Think perhaps I caught some of them off guard?
In this next one, Jesse from Motion City Soundtrack and Chris from UnderOath submit to the keyboard players' equivalent of a sobriety test.
An amazing thing about this night in Ventura was that it was one of the rare venues that was within walking distance of a supermarket. Chris from The Explosion and our pal Bonnie from Crush Management (Armor For Sleep, Fall Out Boy, Midtown, The Academy Is...) took a stroll over and ran into members from DOZENS of bands on the tour. The old ladies working the cash register that night seemed entirely puzzled by the hairy, mostly black-clad, tattooed customer base that night! Oh - and here's a picture of the lovely Ms. Bonnie with Ben.
Anyway, Bonnie, Chris, and I bought so much food and beverage between the three of us that we had to abscond with a shopping cart. My deepest apologies to the Vons near Seaside Park. We hope you found your cart backstage at the venue the next day!
This pic is of Justin from Motion City Soundtrack chatting with Steven after I'd run into Mr. Pierre at said supermarket, purchasing soy milk (though, sadly, not his favorite brand) and snacks.
The next morning (the 4th of July), we awoke in Fresno and stepped off the bus to an entirely different atmosphere - both weather pattern (the temperature was well over 100 in the shade) and non-meteorologically (sooooo many noisy mini-bikes zipping around). Just about everyone either stayed on their air conditioned bus or in the air conditioned catering area all day. Everyone, that is, except for Bob from My Chemical Romance, who just had to test out his incredible new MCR bike (check out the logo on the tank)!
I mentioned that air conditioned catering area, which is where I found Steven shooting the breeze (or lack thereof) with Dave and Andrew from The Explosion.
And last but not least, below you see another picture of Dave with someone who might look vaguely familiar if you've ever visited the Shirts For A Cure booth at a rock festival! That, ladies and gentlemen, is the magnificent Mr. Mark Beemer: rock photographer extraordinaire, founder of the Syrentha Savio Endowment, and mastermind behind the Shirts For A Cure project! If you haven't already been to their site to buy one of the awesome band shirts benefiting cancer relief, then click over to www.shirtsforacure.com and do it!
Wow. That brought back a LOT of fond memories of the summer. Sad that it's over, but I've got some good news: about a month later, I took a whole slew of other pictures at the dusty Warped date at Randall's Island back home in NYC! Expect another post with those in the near future, so we can share one last look back at punk rock summer camp!
Cheers,
ProBRUCEr

I recently came across your blog and have been reading about trauma therapy. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
