London Calling, Yes I Was There Too

Posted on August 31, 2005 at 05:59 PM

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the most prestigious music festivals in the world, England's Reading and Leeds. Taking place simultaneously and located several hours apart, these two festivals each featured three days of music, with three different lineups rotating between the two cities.  This year's main stage headliners were The Pixies, The Foo Fighters and Iron Maiden. For a complete list of who played, you can visit:

On Saturday before the gates opened at 11:30am, Reading was completely empty, but by 12:00, thousands of people flooded in to watch our recent guests, From Autumn to Ashes make their Reading debut as Saturday's main stage openers.

50,000-60,000 people attended each day of each of these festivals.  In addition to the main stage, there were also 5-6 other stages, each with amazing lineups.  It was often hard to decide who to see, and I was constantly running back and forth to catch as many of my favorite artists as possible.  Among others, I saw The Killers, The Pixies, The Foo Fighters, From Autumn To Ashes, The Kings Of Leon, Dinosaur Jr., Queens Of The Stone Age, All-American Rejects, The Cooper Temple Clause, My Chemical Romance, Hot Hot Heat, Emanuel, Eighteen Visions, Ladytron, Sleater-Kinney and The Raveonettes.  Because I went to Leeds on Sunday, I missed Alkaline Trio, Turbonegro, Iggy and The Stooges, Iron Maiden, The Arcade Fire, British Sea Power and Echo and The Bunnymen, among others.  All-in-all the festivals were amazing.  With the exception of some egg/piss throwers, everyone was so polite to each other and to the bands. It was amazing.  Do try to go sometime in your lives if you can!

You Think You're Favorite Band is Punk?

Posted on August 21, 2005 at 03:41 PM

Well forget it.  Mine too.  Anybody who does their own thing and does it because they love it, is punk in my book.  Whenever people ask me who the most punk artist is I usually say Prince.  He's original, amazing multi-instrumentalist, and damn, damn good songwriter.  Also, doesn't give a fudge.  That's punk.

As you know I saw Gorilla Biscuits last Sunday at CBGB's and it was one of the most inspiring performances of my life.  I thought it couldn't be topped and then, this past Thursday I saw one man command an entire stadium full of people.  GB were amazing, flawless, raw, but this was true charisma and artistry.  Ladies and Gentlemen I give you Neil Diamond!  136_3668_1

Don't think I'm kidding.  The man is a phenomenon.  My parents are fans, I'm a fan, and when I wore his shirt on SURS interviewing Death Cab for Cutie (one of my favorite bands) they were all excited because they were going that night.

See, here's the cool part.  I love music.  I always have.  Going to a concert, it's like church for me.  But there are a number of bands I don't get to see anymore because they broke up, stopped touring, died, or quit.  That's different from breaking up.

But here is a man whose been in the game for over five decades.  AND HE'S STILL DOING IT.  He's released one album of new material since 1974 and that was four years ago.  AND HE SOLD OUT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN THREE DAMN NIGHTS IN A ROW.

The reason II get so excited about this is because it's really hard to find artists still touring,  bands still together, musicians who haven't quit or worse, gotten bored.  I just found out one of my all time favorite bands is breaking up this year.  I've seen them every year for the past nine years and now they're ending.  It just breaks my heart.

But it's hard to bein a band, I did it in college, it's tough, wasn't for me.  Nick from Death Cab said in-between our interviews that somebody told him the most important thing you can do as a band is stay together.  This is true, but it's hard, and Mr. Neil Diamond, he's had the same band the whole time.  It's amazing.  Absolutely amazing.

We can all count ourselves lucky if our favorite band of the moment is still touring when we are our parents age.  God, I hope so.  So, if you're parents are heading out to see Mr. Diamond, I strongly suggest you check you angst at the door, and go check him out.  I loved every second of it.

And if anybody is headed out to see the Promise Ring reunite in Chicago?  Please take pictures.  I'm still getting over that one.

your friend,

Steven

Neil Diamond's new record is out in September, produced by Rick Rubin, who founded Def Jam, produced the Beastie Boys, Slayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Johnny Cash among others.  Pretty damn punk.

Inquisition

Posted on August 17, 2005 at 05:30 PM

Hey peoples, Steven here.  I wanna talk to you about Inquisition.

No, I'm not going to interrogate you but I am going to educate you.  I just spoke with Funeral For a Friend today, who told me when they played NYC's Warped Tour this past weekend, they asked the crowd how many people were going to see Gorilla Biscuits at CBGBs.  They were answered in silence.

This disturbs me because although they haven't been around in a while they are one of, if not, THE New York hardcore band.  I equate them with Minor Threat in DC and Black Flag in LA.  If you don't know their music, go check out their records.  Awesome, awesome stuff.

And now Inquisition.  Inquisition was a Richmond, VA hardcore band whose record (see below) will be re-released on Anti-Flag's AF Records, featured members of Ann Beretta, River City High, and SURS fav Strike Anywhere.

This is a great record and the fact it's being re-released means you have no excuse not to go check it out.  I think you'll dig it.  I know I do.

GB @ CBGB's

Posted on August 16, 2005 at 10:49 PM

Hola kids, soy un Esteban.  Man, my Spanish sucks.  Hey It's Steven, after a long absence from the old blog and I'm here to talk about one of the greatest shows I have ever seen.

Gorilla Biscuits and Black Train Jack at CBGB's.

Not sure how many old hardcore fans there are for the rock show but one sure as hell hosts it.  I was but a wee lad, listening to the likes of Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Poison, you get the idea, when my soon to be best friend for life gave me a copy of  Out of Step by the great Minor Threat.  This was my first taste of hardcore and I was hooked.

Gorilla Biscuits and Black Train Jack, whom I haven't seen IN over ten years, played a Save CBGB's Benefit show Sunday August 14th, following the hottest day of the year in NYC, the same day we covered the Warped Tour there.  Pretty damn hot.  Tired as I was I couldn't pass up this show.

And thank Jehu I didn't.  This show was inspiring.  After the show was over, a certain member of a certain band we play on the show (don't wanna name drop - sounds cheezy) said to me, "Man, I wish I could go outside and it was '87 all over again."

Now friends, I've seen U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, nothing, NOTHING  compares to the intensity of this show.  The energy of the crowd, the bands I saw.  It was pure insanity, or as my friend Nathan says, "Bananas!"  At one point I looked out from my vantage point behind the stage (best view for a hardcore show by the way, you can see the whole band play AND the crowd - sounds good too) and said to myself, "I can't believe people are smoking in here - oh wait, that's STEAM!"

Black Train Jack blistered through their set.  I love this band, it's a damn shame they broke up so long ago.  I can't believe I was lucky enough to see them reform one last time.  Go buy their record No Reward immediately.  The track Leapfrog especially.  When they played it, I was the one on the chair by the wall in front of the sound board jumping around like an idiot.  Okay, there were a few of us.

Then it was time for Gorilla Biscuits.  OH GB!  I have never seen them before and was super-psyched.  More than psyched.  From the moment they came on stage to the last note they were phenomenal.  And having so much fun!  This was what hardcore fans dream about.   There's a big difference but all united under one common bond - music.  Sounds cheezy but damn is it true.  When I say inspiring, I mean it.

But seriously, don't take my word for it.   Check it out for yourself:

http://www.naroni.com/~nick/GB/

I don't think you'll be disappointed, except by the fact you weren't there.

Enjoy!

Army Of Me

Posted on August 11, 2005 at 04:18 PM

Each of us at the Untitled Rock Show fancy our self’s music connoisseurs in some fashion or another…Of course this opinion is obviously subjective, but regardless we feel the need to put you in-the-know on not only the bands we play on SURS, but also on those not yet gracing your television airwaves.  And let me tell you, I saw one amazing performance last night from one of my new favorite bands, Army of Me!!!

Army_of_me_2

Now pardon me while I gush for a second, but I absolutely love this band.  I’m not going to lie, I’ve been sitting here for 15 minutes already trying to figure out how to describe how talented and passion-filled Vince, Brad, Dennis and John are, but I really think it is really best if you just find out for yourselves.  So here are the links:

I think my friend Deewall summed it up best (and most eloquently) when he IM-ed me this morning, “Holy f*ck they killed that sh*t last night!”

Got blood?

Posted on August 4, 2005 at 01:01 PM

As we told you when we played Something Corporate on the show this week, SoCo and Jack's Mannequin frontman Andrew McMahon has asked any fans concerned about his leukemia diagnosis to donate blood in lieu of sending flowers or gifts.

If you don't know where to give blood in your area, you can enter your ZIP code at www.americasblood.org or www.givelife.org to locate your local donation sites.

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, and right now we're in a severe shortage. It doesn't take much time or effort to part with a pint of the red stuff, and they'll even give you juice and cookies after they Band-Aid you up, so I hope some of you out there will brave a needle prick to help your fellow humans!

If you're too young, or if you have a medical condition preventing you from donating, your local blood center might still need your help in throwing, promoting, or managing some aspect of a local blood drive, so call them up and ask if you can be of assistance!

As always, thanks for watching, thanks for rocking, and most of all thanks for caring!

Cheers,
ProBRUCEr

Stay up late?

Posted on August 3, 2005 at 04:37 PM

We've got some great news for insomniac fans of SURS (or for anyone with a VCR or TiVo): the programming powers that be have given us a third timeslot each day, at 3:00 am ET, 12:00 midnight PT!

This won't be another airing of either episode you caught earlier in the day, though--it'll be a completely different "Best Of" episode, including some recent ones you've been begging for! Here's the roster of the remaining late night repeats this week:

Wednesday night, 8/3: MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE on site at Vans Warped Tour

Thursday night, 8/4: AVENGED SEVENFOLD, THE BLED, ATREYU, and UNDEROATH on site at Vans Warped Tour

Friday night, 8/5: THE OFFSPRING, DROPKICK MURPHYS, MXPX, and BLEED THE DREAM on site at Vans Warped Tour

Stock up on No-Doz and invite your friends to a SURS slumber party! Or just set the timers on your recording devices. Remember, your TiVo or VCR will probably list the actual date as the following day since these are technically early morning airtimes. We hope you'll tune in for your third heaping helping of rock every day!

Cheers,
ProBRUCEr

Dirty Little Secrets...

Posted on August 2, 2005 at 05:17 PM

In preparation for our SURS premiere of the All-American Rejects' newest video "Dirty Little Secret," I'd like to give you a little insight as to where the concept for the video originated.  The new video has been rotating around the channel for a bit now, so if you've seen it - good for you, and if you haven't - well...we'll forgive you for only tuning into SURS (heh heh).

Anyways, the video is composed of a series of random people holding out postcards, each with a different "dirty little secret" written on them.  Director Marcos Siega's inspiration came directly from one of my personal favorite websites/blogs:

www.postsecret.blogspot.com

Through this website, people find peace of mind by sending in their deepest, darkest, funniest, strangest and sometimes most perverted secrets on decorated postcards to be anonymously posted online  I've been reading this blog for about six months now and anxiously await the new batch of secrets posted each Sunday. I encourage all of you to seriously check this site out. I've found that reading other's secrets can be quite therapeutic.  If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, you can even find the address to send your own in and join the numerous people who've freed themselves from the burden of a secret.  The Rejects themselves were even so moved by this idea, that they also created their own version of PostSecret through their site www.allamericanrejects.com.

So be sure to tune into our Warped Wednesday edition(s) of SURS on August 17th, not only to watch video, but also to see Steven chat with Tyson, Nick, Mike and Chris (in addition to The Starting Line, Matchbook Romance and Plain White T's).
