Batty for Avenged Sevenfold

Posted on July 28, 2005 at 12:18 PM

As some of you learned yesterday from their email blast, Avenged Sevenfold recently built a MySpace profile, and effective today, they've christened it (or perhaps sataned it?) with the world premiere of their brand new video for "Bat Country!"

Of course, I can suggest a little TV show where you'll be able to watch "Bat Country" very soon, but until then, check it out at http://www.myspace.com/avengedsevenfold.

While you're there, pop on over and pay us a visit on MySpace (and add us if you haven't already) at http://www.myspace.com/surs.

And one last A7X note: on Friday afternoon, you'll be able to find brand new web extras from the men in black (as well as some of our other Warped faves) through the Warped link at www.fuse.tv/steven.

Cheers,

ProBRUCEr

A7X, The Bled, UnderOath & Atreyu on SURS today!

Posted on July 27, 2005 at 03:04 PM

By now some of you are used to fun pictures every week of Steven with bands on Warped Wednesdays. Sadly, I was a very forgetful ProBRUCEr the day we shot today's episode and I got absolutely no snapshots of any of the bands we chatted with. Please don't hurt me!!!

But regardless of a lack of snaps, you should still flip us on today, July 27, at 4:00 & 10:00 ET, 1:00 & 7:00 PT to catch AVENGED SEVENFOLD, UNDEROATH, ATREYU, and THE BLED!

And don't forget, we've still got three more great episodes from on site at Vans Warped Tour coming your way in the next couple weeks:

August 3 - The Offspring, MxPx, Dropkick Murphys, Bleed The Dream

August 10 - Thrice, No Use For A Name, The Explosion, The Unseen

August 17 - All American Rejects, The Starting Line, Matchbook Romance, Plain White T's.

You can find online extras with many of the bands you've already seen on air right now through the Warped link at www.fuse.tv/steven, with more to come every Friday for the rest of the summer. And while you're over there, check out the amazing fan-submitted photo blog. You can view pics city-by-city to relive your Warped experience and see if you're in the back of anybody's shot!

Cheers,

Influence This

Posted on July 26, 2005 at 03:04 PM

Hola Ninos, Esteban in the proverbial blog house with a little history type lesson for your asses.  I say "type" lesson because this classroom activity involves your discretion and those of my SURS cohorts.  In short, everything I'm about to write is open, as always, to your interpretation.  Agree, disagree, write and respond.  This'll be fun.

In blog's past, I posed the query, "What artists/bands recording today, do you think will be considered highly influential to bands in the years to come."  Now, as expected, we got a lot of My Chem and Green Day answers.  This intrigued me because not only do MCR consider GD to be one of their biggest influences but I bought my first Green Day record in '93.  Not quite an artist recording today but rather "still" recording.

This got me to thinking:  Is Green Day the main influence of My Chemical Romance?  Whose influence do I hear in Green Day's sound?

The wheels in my head started clacking (low oil) and I decided to go through the list of the artists posted in your comments and decipher who I think their biggest influences are.  I've arranged them in a basic list form, arist on the right, their influence on the left.

Now remember these are just opinions.  Bruce, Rachel, and you guys might disagree, agree but have addendums, or think I'm the biggest Know-It-All this side of St. Louis.  So, give it a read.  I love to know your thoughts.  And now, THE LIST

  • My Chemical Romance - Smashing Pumpkins
  • Avenged Sevenfold - Metallica
  • The Used - Refused
  • Taking Back Sunday - Lifetime
  • Saves the Day - Lifetime
  • Incubus - Faith No More
  • Glassjaw - Faith No More
  • NIN - Ministry and Depeche Mode
  • Green Day - Mr. T Experience (you read it right, check them out)
  • Boxcar Racer - they say Fugazi, Quicksand, Refused but I have to say Blink, wonder why?
  • Muse - Radiohead
  • Alkaline Trio - Jawbreaker (who were heavily influenced by Cheap Trick)
  • The Killers - David Bowie
  • AFI - Misfits
  • Coheed and Cambria - Rush
  • Flogging Molly - the Pogues
  • Interpol - Joy Division
  • The Dead 60's - the Clash
  • Thursday - Far
  • Nirvana - Pixies (and after revisiting their early work, Dinosaur Jr, it's amazing how influenced Mr. Cobain was by J Mascis)

Now, there's a bunch I didn't include here (Garbage, Conor Oberst, the White Stripes,) which you can take on yourself.  Give them a whirl.

And by the by if there's a couple of bands up there you haven't heard of before.  Give them a listen.  Good stuff.  They have some pretty big fans.

Alright.  Your turn.

Posted on July 25, 2005 at 03:27 PM

We've got some great news for you classics lovers in the audience! We were lucky enough to catch up with the original lineup of Dinosaur Jr: J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph, when they were in town for the NYC show on their reunion tour earlier this month!

Dino

We were really happy to snag an interview with the living legends, and to further our delight, even THEY were happy. No, seriously...you can even see J cracking a smile here!

Dino3

We hope to bring that chat to you on air within the next month or two, and you can be sure that it'll be combined with a show-ending classic from Dinosaur Jr!

Once you register, you'll get a text message with a 6-digit number that you'll have to enter at the site to confirm your subscription, and then you'll be one of the lucky few to know what's coming up before it hits the air!

As a reminder, just some of the bands with at least one classic in the SURS rotation include:

MY PEOPLES

Posted on July 22, 2005 at 07:55 PM

Hi everybody.  Steven here to give you the skinny on why YOU our rocksteady rock fans rule so much.

The reason it would seem is that our blog is kicking major major ass and in comparison to our other Fuse compatriots we are in the number one spot.  This makes us warm in the cockles of our heart.

Now the show itself is also doing damn, damn good and our heartfelt thanks go out to all of youse.  The best part is since we've been gone (sounds like a song I heard) there have been oodles and oodles of reruns.  And these shows, that did great before, are doing even better.

So, thank you.  Sincerely, from all of us.  Especially, me because when  I meet you at shows or just on the street if makes me feel so good to know you are out there watching.  This is good for us, the bands, and you.  I'm glad you like the show.  More to come.

And for all of you who responded to my last post regarding who you think is the most influential "new" artist, allow me to reiterate the question because there have been some questions regarding the question.  You follow?  No?  Well, we'll move on anyway.

So many bands cite Green Day as an influence, Green Day have cited the Ramones as an influence.  Which artist/band recording today do you think will be regarded as a huge influence in later years.  Make sense?  We've gotten a lot of My Chem answers, who else?

This is for discussions sake and fun to do.   So DISCUSS!

Be well.

STEVEN

FROM FIRST TO LAST episode repeats TODAY

Posted on July 21, 2005 at 03:38 PM

Since we're doing our second "Best Of Week" this month, we picked out some old nuggets that we thought would make you viewer types happy.

So it is surely on some of your calendars that TODAY, July 21, at 4:00 & 10:00 pm EST (1:00 & 7:00 pm PST), we will repeat our two half hour episodes from The Epitaph Tour, which were the first time we talked to any of the bands involved:

FROM FIRST TO LAST
MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK
MATCHBOOK ROMANCE
SCATTER THE ASHES

The name From First To Last comes up ALL THE TIME when people request repeats, so we sure hope y'all tune in! Here's a pic of the guys of FFTL taken by Steven that day and originally posted in his blog entry about the shoot (where you can also find a more hi-res copy of this pic).

Fftl2

We also caught up with Sonny, Matt, Travis, Jon, & Derek for a few minutes at Vans Warped Tour, so you'll be able to see a bit more of them either in SURS or the Warped Wrapup Special later this summer. In the meantime, you can check out the Warped link at www.fuse.tv/steven to watch a clip of Epitaph honcho "Mr. Brett" Gurewitz raving about the band.

As always, feel free to spread the word and link to us here from any blog, message board, or fan site that's appropriate! Rock on, rockers!

Cheers,

ProBRUCEr

A whole hour with My Chem!

Posted on July 20, 2005 at 01:58 PM

A lot of you have been waiting with baited breath for the past month for our Warped Wednesday episode spending the full hour with Mikey Way, Frank Iero, and Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance [dunno where Bob & Ray were that afternoon]. Well, the day has finally arrived, rock people!

Yup, today, July 20, at 4:00 & 10:00 pm EST (1:00 & 7:00 PST), MCR will be our only guests on the latest Warped Wednesday edition from on site at Vans Warped Tour! Though the episodes of Steven's Untitled Rock Show shot on location at Vans Warped Tour in California this month each feature four artists, we broke our own pattern for this program, dedicating the entire hour to catching up with Frank, Gerard, & Mikey.

Ss_mcr_1

Among other things, the guys will fill Steven in on the details of their forthcoming video "The Ghost Of You"; discuss life on the Vans Warped Tour; explain the modifications made to turn their bus into a mobile recording studio; and play show-and-tell with the very cool prototypes of their upcoming action figures.

Ss_mcr2

My favorite fact that came out during our shoot that you won't see on air today: Mikey Way, despite misconceptions to the contrary, does NOT have asthma. The inhaler in the "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" video was just a prop, but it seems to have made everyone think that he's asthmatic!

Enjoy the episode, and make sure you check out the rest of our Best Of Week: a two-shot of episodes Thursday at 4 & 10 featuring From First To Last, Motion City Soundtrack, Scatter The Ashes, and Matchbook Romance from the Epitaph Tour; then chats with members of MBR, The Used, Pennywise, and Sugarcult at the Alternative Press 20th anniversary party to top things off Friday. ROCKTASTIC!

Cheers,

ProBRUCEr

Don't strike these Matches

Posted on July 19, 2005 at 05:41 PM

We'll be posting some pics from our shoot with My Chemical Romance tomorrow, but in the meantime, I wanted to toss out a couple more from one of your other favorites, The Matches.

Many of you on fan sites and message boards have commented on the socks frontman Shawn Harris was wearing, which you can see better in this shot of him and Steven.

Shawn_matches_ss

Funny thing is, any of you can get the same look in your very own home, so long as you've got a pair of tube socks and a permanent marker. Yup, the artistic Mr. Harris apparently drew on those stripes himself. Such a talent...I guess that's why we got him and the other guys in the band to design the AMAZING wall panels of our Fuse tent out there on this year's Vans Warped Tour! Here's another one with his artsy accomplice, bassist Justin San Souci. Stop covering up that Fuse mic cube, Shawn!

Justin_shawn_matches

Remember, we've got more Warped Wednesday fun for you on tap at SURS throughout the summer, with My Chemical Romance tomorrow and a whole lot more over the following weeks! For full details, check out our previous post with the full air schedule or our other previous post for more pics of The Matches!

Cheers,
ProBRUCEr
