Webcam lip synching fun

Posted on January 31, 2005 at 11:01 PM

Picture it: your favorite song comes on. You go psycho. You jump around in your mirror. You lip synch every word. You BECOME the singer. We've all been there.

But we haven't all posted it online.

This is an old favorite of mine for two reasons: System of a Down are a f'in' amazing band, and the two dudes are easy on the eyes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJKSUPuGt2M&mode=related&search=

This is a new favorite that came to me from my friend Todd through my friend Cookie (who works on Daily Download)...though this music is ridiculously crappy and the guy is not nearly as humpy: http://www.orapois.com/br/arquivos/01032005140525688g.swf

Got any others? We'd love to see 'em. Send us the link (but NO ATTACHMENTS) at stevensshow@fuse.tv

CAUSE and effect

Posted on January 31, 2005 at 04:47 PM

The indie/punk/hardcore scene has a long history of community activism, benefit concerts for sick friends, and supporting good causes in general. Here at Steven's Untitled Rock Show, we're dedicated to bringing that tradition to our airwaves as often as possible. We hope you'll take a moment to visit these sites, learn about their work, and support them in whatever ways you can!

www.musicforrelief.org  After the 12/26/04 disaster in south Asia, the guys from Linkin Park rallied a lot of their musical brethren to found Music For Relief, established to help the American Red Cross (www.redcross.org) in their tsunami relief efforts. Some of the many other partners in Music For Relief are Ash, Autopilot Off, Blondie, Everclear, Filter, From Autumn To Ashes, Good Charlotte, Hoobastank, Incubus, Lost Prophets, Otep, Sevendust, Story of the Year, Taking Back Sunday, The Starting Line, The Used, Tom Morello, 311, and Yellowcard. We shot two episodes of our show at the Tsunami Relief benefit that Music For Relief helped set up at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey on January 12 featuring Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, Coheed and Cambria, Senses Fail, Like Yesterday, and The Banner. That show, along with a second show on Sunday 1/16 (with The Starting Line, Midtown, From Autumn To Ashes, The Early November, Underoath, and The Youth Ahead) hauled in a combined $150,000+. Big ups to all the bands, K-Rock radio, and everybody at the Starland for doing such an incredible job!

www.holdontoyourfriends.com  This is the website for The Sean McGrath Fund, an organization founded initially to raise money to help Saves The Day founding member Sean McGrath (also formerly of Jersey hardcore bands Hands Tied & Mouthpiece) pay his medical expenses after his diagnosis with digestive tract cancer in spring of 2002. Most notably, Sean's old friends in Midtown and Thursday (and his new friends in Taking Back Sunday and the Movielife) sprang into action and did a sold out NYC benefit for him at the venerable Irving Plaza that June. Sean sadly died on June 11, 2004, but his family and friends (including ProBRUCEr) are founding the official nonprofit and continuing to raise funds for distribution to cancer charities around the country. After playing a Saves the Day video on the show, we mentioned Vagrant's "In Honor" charity CD with proceeds split between The Sean McGrath Fund and fellow cancer fundraiser Syrentha Savio Foundation (www.syrentha.org). It's a cheap double-disc packed with amazing bands--go buy it!

www.warchild.org  War Child is the umbrella group of children's welfare organizations, aiming to help children in war-torn countries and refugee camps around the globe. Sum 41 were shooting a War Child documentary in the Republic of Congo when they were suddenly trapped in a militarized zone and saved by a U.N. peacekeeper called Chuck Pelletier (thus the name of their album, "Chuck"). When the band came by the show last week, they told us the documentary is nearing completion, so be on the lookout for that in the not too distant future!

www.secretmedia.org - This is the home of Secret Media Group, a nonprofit organization that seeks to create and strengthen the ties between the music community and the worlds of activism and philanthropy. Even though we haven't mentioned them on the show before, we thought some of you might want to check 'em out. At their site, you can read news updates on music-related charity and activism, sign up for the mailing list, and stay tuned for 2005 plans as they evolve! [Full disclosure:  ProBRUCEr is the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Secret Media Group.]

We've got mail!

Posted on January 28, 2005 at 01:52 PM

Hello, all! They call me Bruce, and I'm the producer of Steven's Untitled Rock Show. Steven and I will be updating this blog regularly, and I wanted to use my first post to feature some of your very own comments! You've been sending us tons of mail to stevensshow@fuse.tv, and as promised, we've read every single word! I even passed a lot of your messages on to some of our senior executives here at Fuse, and included my own comments in brackets for their perusal. Read on for some of the best (and worst)! And if you think these are funny, you should definitely tune in February 7 - 11 at 4:00 and 9:00 ET (1:00 and 6:00 PT), when we'll be dedicating the entire week's worth of shows to reading YOUR comments on air!

=========================================================

And by the way....i would really appreciate it if you got out of all those hits they paly on the radio and get more into harder more emo stuff. For example, here are some of my favorite bands....The Used, Underoath, Saves The Day, Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, Hawthorne Heights, Thursday, Letter Kills, Finch, From Autumn To Ashes, Matchbook Romance, Brand New, The Postal Service and a whole lot more. If you expanded your rock music playing range, the number of viewers would definitely rise. Emo/screamo/indie is the new hype that all rockers from ages 12-25 are into.

[Well, this young lady will definitely be a regular viewer!]

What about the name:  Ultimate Rock.  All the other names sound lame. My suggestion sounds lame too, but not as lame as:  Rock Recess.

[Well, at least he knows HE's lame too.]

i love ur show because i luv rock music so much and i'm gald u guys don't but that much rap and hip hop.

[Funny how that works...a show called "Rock Show" doesn't play that much rap & hip hop.]

Hey Steven!

My suggestion for your show's name is "Lather, Rinse, and Repeat". Hey you said that on your show, so I've gotta give you props!

[Well, he also said "How incredibly uninteresting," but that doesn't mean it's a good title.]

Listen donkeyboy nuts, this show is crap. The corn bits in my s**t have more talent then steven will ever have!!!! -slayer42

[Wow...we'd better change our playlist to all-Slayer, all the time for this f***bucket.]

you better! today steven played an old used song and a song from the pixies (i dot really know them since i dont know many older bands...)

[And that is one of the coolest things about the classic clips. SO glad we've got those.]

rancid, bad religion, flogging molly, and rise against. your other bands suck.

[Now, now...there's room for something for everyone. But I partially agree...we need a lot more Bad Religion up in here!]

i think the show should consist of nothing but clash videos and it sould be called either 'steven's half hour of clash power' or 'the only show that matters.' thank you.

[That would be cool, but since there is a very finite number of Clash videos to play with, it might get just a tad repetetive around week two.]

Who honestly cares what this show is called? It's a great show, that's all that matters, it doesn't need a title to convey that. In any case, I'm anxious to see what you choose as the title. I'm hoping it's not going to be super lame, but I trust you Steven!

[Ummmm...what part of YOU pick the name isn’t clear?]

I'm not sure because it maybe a little to long, but maybe something like:

"Forget the Damn Sheep: Just Rock..."

Anyway, thanks guys. This show's great and I really appreciate its creation. It simply...rocks.

[Yes, the show does rock. Unfortunately, their name doesn't. But it is funny. Not in a haha way, but...]

awesome! this is the best musc show evre! you guys chose vert well and picked the bestr bads that should be all in one show! cant wait tosee the new name!!

[Nice compliment, but it's really not that difficult to proof-read a three-sentence email.]

The name of the show should be "Bringing You Back To Life" because, for some, it will.

[Well said.]

Steven said you read everything so here goes.

A muffin in an oven turns to another muffin and says "man, its getting really hot in here" the other muffin turned to the first muffin and said. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH, A talking Muffin."

[OK, I've got to say, it gets funnier every time I read it.]

hey steve or whoever is reading

i love the show and i personally think you should get and hour instead of a half hour

also i love how you play good music the "emo" bands that are played just makes a great playlist and the videos are awsome

you should try to get some straylight run or northstar on there

[Hour instead of a half hour? I agree. Good playlist? I agree Add Straylight Run and Northstar? Again, I agree. Did I write this myself in a drunken stupor?]

I just saw your show and I wanted to thank you for not being a douche! Most of the hosts on music channels genuinely suck and you have successfully honed the art of not being a complete tool. You play great videos and I’m glad you aren’t on some lame network like MTV. Thanks for supplying great music like My Chemical Romance and Senses Fail. You asked for some suggestions and here is the only one you should listen to. I happen to believe that SKA isn’t dead. In fact it is very much alive. Reel Big Fish has a new album coming out this spring and it is sure to rock harder than anything that is out right now. This Missouri SKA freak would really enjoy some videos from RBF or Less Than Jake. Keep up the great work and work your magic and get some SKA on my TV.

[Just in case Steven starts to slide, I'll keep my douche monitor handy and stay on tool watch. And I'm not opposed to a pinch of ska...but much like taragon or dill, a little goes a loooong way.]

i came up with a name for the show

i had a dream last night that i was seeing the show but that its name was :

TODAY'S ROCK SUPPLY

[A little too "Air Supply." Even though I like them. C'mon...I'm a soft boy. They're pre-emo.]

I think a simple, yet catchy name would be the best, so viewers can remember and say to each other the next day at school or work "hey did you watch S.P.O.R. yesterday?" S.P.O.R. means Stevens Pile Of Rock. And on the off chance you decide to can Steven in the next few years and the show is still going you can: A. hire a host with the same first initial or B. hire a host with a different first initial, and simply call the show something else, like for example if I were the host(my name is Jeromy) the show would be called JPOR.

Just a thought.

[Uhhhh...thanks, dude. Don't call us. We'll call you.]

Hey, I think Steven's Rock Review would be a cool name for your show. By the way,it's a great show & I'm addicted. I love the classic at the end; That allows me to be introduced to some videos I've never seen. Thanks for the great show!

[Again, I LOVE that people are digging the classic. Conventional wisdom at the OTHER music channels is that viewers didn't care about anything that isn’t current. I was always convinced they had their heads up their asses. Glad to see I was right.]

well I was saving this name for my future band but I think it'll seem cooler on TV with Steven it's

NOXCUSE

the meaning behind it is there is no excuse for our music and no excuse on why we like to play it....hence NOXCUSE. I know it probably sounds lame but plz say this to yourselfs out loud...

Hey there, and welcome back to NOXCUSE...the show where you,the fans, choose the vids we play with no excuses as to why you like them.

Pretty Catchy huh?

[NOXCUSE? I think NOFX would issue a cease and desist.]

I think that the show should be called R.I.P. rock, indie, punk. I think that it would give the show an edge if it was called that. Well I like it.

[Wow. That’s actually really f'ing cool. I’m so jealous that I didn’t come up with that myself. Uhhhh, I mean…yeah, I’m really glad I came up with that! I’m really clever, don’t you agree?]

"the hot One" steven is the only male host on fuse, unless I am mistaken and he is hot. :p

The show also features the hottest(as in freshest) music and artists.

[Sssshhhhhhhhhhh…don’t tell Dylan about this one.]

Dear Fuse,

You guys hardly ever play metal only on Uranium which comes on late at night and still hardly ever plays music, So as a suggestion how about the name "Hardcore Steven's rock show" where metal and hard rock could be played, you know give a little more to the metal heads out there.

P.S. you rock \m/

[I know a certain producer who's down with some well-selected metal and hardcore being included…especially the good ol’ stuff…AC/DC, anyone? Or Priest? Or Maiden? Anthrax? Sabbath? Tool? Motorhead? System of a Down? Hell yeah!]

I don’t knoe I just think that this new show totally kix ass! keep up the great work fuse and Steven!!  oh and if u could please play more avenged sevenfold, green day, and maybe more oldies from the smiths!  buh byes!

[More good feedback on the oldies. And in particular on my very favorite sort of oldies. Rad.]

Hey yall... what's up??? Okay, here's the deal... yall said we had the choice to choose the name of Steven's show right??? Well, I like the name just as it is... "Steven's untitled rock show". I watch the show everyday because i cant stand the crap that mtv and mtv2 n channels like that play. All they play is Hip-Hop n Pop... and to tell you the truth me and all of my friends can't stand that crap (using that term lightly). But anyway, me and my friends love rock, and lately fuse has been slacking off a little in that catgory by playing destiny's child n crap like that. And now that Steven has this show... me and my friends finally get to hear the music we like and want to hear. And seeing how fuse hasnt been living up to its true meaning, all rock all the time... Steven makes up for it. So thanks and I look forward to seeing the show tomorrow..... * Melanie K. *

[Remember that old Toyota slogan, "You asked for it, you got it!"? TONS of people are asking to keep “SURS”…this HAS to be one of the ten finalists!]

this show should be called: "this show should be an hour long!"

[I know "The Trio" are all down with this. Is there any possibility our communal wish will ever be granted?]

hey Steven guess what I just thought again?  you should name the show.

            "Steve's Rebengish Rock Show"

you have to admit it sounds kinda catchy ehh? just trust me everyone will be like, "Why didn't I think of that?"  DUDE JUST TRUST ME!!!!!!!!!!!!

["They put me in an institution, said it was the only solution to give me needed professional help to protect me from the enemy, myself." -Suicidal Tendencies]

You guys know your stuff.

Except one thing: How are you going to play videos from At The Drive-In and Sparta and none from The Mars Volta (who have a new album coming out in February)?

[We know we know our stuff. We know you know we know our stuff. 'Cause we ARE you. As for Mars Volta...patience is a virtue…]

how about, 'Steven's Video Delight? a) because he delights in music b) because its slightly camp, just like him and c) because i would get such a kick out of hearing him say: "Welcome to my VD" - and so would he!

[Camp? Yeah, you're a regular John Waters, Steven!]

I believe that the name of the show should just be Steven's Untitled Rock Show...

I know it seems like I'm really uncreative, but it really speaks to the demographic of people like me who really only care about the music, not the title of the show. I've watched the show a lot, and honestly, the name as it is already sounds really good and I know that the show doesn't need a good title to get people to watch it.  I think that the concept of the people naming the show is cool, but I'm so sick of people trying to find a catchy name for something so simple...MTV does this all the time. (I know, I know...a highly over-used but true example.) So, in short, let us have our Steven's Untitled Rock Show. I personally know plenty of people who watch FUSE only because it is the only music channel we know of that won't play stupid stuff like the Newlyweds or Real World and actually PLAY MUSIC (a novel concept for a music channel these days I guess)...Steven's Untitled Rock Show...the title with tact...Think about it...

Thank you for your time and consideration of my idea.

*I LOVE MUSIC AND FUSE FOR ACTUALLY PLAYING IT*

[This particular appeal is a bit more thought out and wordy than most of the grassroots "keep the name" contingent, but they're still coming in droves...gotta put that one up for voting!]

Rock Fusion (momz idea)

Rock Vision (momz idea)

Rockavision (momz idea)

Stevenision (stee-vin-i-sion [like vision but without the vi in vision])

[...and this one, from a different viewer...]

Me: "Mom, if you had a rock show, what would you call it?"

Mom: "Wicked Bitchin!"

Me: ".... AHAHAHAHAHA.."

So, there you have it.  The show's new name is "Wicked Bitchin," and everyone will love it.

-fuse member "moruhine"

["Steven's Untitled Rock Show"--a program even your mother can love!]

I think that a really hillarious name would be the onefrom the commercial--"the punky dooby wamma lammaslappy dappy hour"--or maybe it wasn't "slappy dappy",but you know which one i mean.

[I think I'm gonna hurl.]

The name for Steven's Untitled Rock Show should be A Vaction for all the Punk-Ass Kids. Cuz thats what it is. i come home from school every day and turn on fuse and wait for Steven's Untitled RockShow to come on. it takes me away from this preppy ass world and there's nothing better than that.

[Yeah, I wish I’d had something like this to come home to after avoiding the preps and jocks all day! But then again, they didn’t have cable out in the sticks where I grew up…]

Hi Steven. I was watching you on FUSE, and I'm sure you get this a lot, but your really extremely georgous! I was wondering how old you are? I have pictures if you'd like to see. Just let me know. Maybe if you have AIM or AOL, or Even Yahoo messenger we can chat instantly. You seem like a really cool guy. I love your facial expressions they are too damn cute. Hit me up later.

[Poor, poor girl...this never works! I've sent the same message to Topher Grace for years and he's never gotten back to me.]

Strange Fruit: Notes from the Underground

Strange Fruit is the name of a Billie Holiday song, and Notes for the Underground is sorta taken from Dostoevsky's notes from underground. The two together seem to take shape rather nicely and become it's own entity. Truth is I've always wanted to use the name for something: a record store, song, fanzine. I've never found the right place for its use. That is not until I saw that a television network needed a title. A network which provides what it advertises...Music. I also enjoy seeing someone on a music television channel who looks like they actually enjoy music. Milemarker and Strike Anywhere t-shirts are a welcome look.  Thanks for existing.

[Wow...this guy starts out with Billie and Dostoevsky references and ends with Milemarker and Strike Anywhere. What a renaissance man!]

Personally I think the show should be called "Steven's Untitled Rock Show because I (no offense) think all the suggestions pretty much suck (not in a bad way, just in a way where i dont feel they fit the show), and Steven did say he would like his name to be in the title. Plus I think it sounds original and I guess it's just grown on me and I've gotten used to seeing it when i click the button on the remote, so I think it would feel weird not to see it anymore. A part of me would be missing *tear* so I really hope you could consider keeping it as the title. Thanks for your time,  -

[They're growing more and more vociferous!!!]

Steven's untitled rock show should be called Music's Last Hope.  Every other station that plays music videos plays absolute crap.  This is the first show I've seen in a long time that plays all songs I (and all of my friends) agree with.  THANK YOU FUSE FOR SAVING THE MUSIC!  You truly are Music's Last Hope.

[This one's gonna make it on air at some point. Word.]

the show should be called "steven's hour long rock show", because the show is entirely too short.

[I concur! Let's do it!]

the whole title should be (please don't cut it down!) :

Stephen's Immortally Sweet Ultimate Omega Paragon Rockaplooza Hour long Dream Time Reality Utopia Rock Music Video Show, With a Slight Chance of Rain, a Tropical Climate, and Winds up to 90 Miles Per Hour.

[Someone's mommy told them they were special way too much in their formative years.]

In my opinion i belive that the show should be left untitled. The facts are that the show is about good music and rockin' out and the love of the music thats being shown... the name shouldn't be important. What's important is the music that is played on the said "Untitled" show. This music needs no introduction much less a "title". I hope you take this suggestion to heart and atleast add it to the poll and let my opinion be heard. Please consider this as an option.

[The continuing cry for keeping the show "untitled"...and a good argument to boot!]

Woo! It's quite the neat-o new show, Fuse.

[Neat-o? She couldn't have busted out Badass or some other butch compliment?]

i have a couple of  ideas for the show title:

More Commercial Crap For Upper Middle Class 12 Year Olds

or maybe

Fuse Presents: Bands You Knew About 4 Years Ago But Have Since Lost All Repect For

[Baloney. Most of our bands didn't even exist FOUR years ago.]

I've watched your new show a few times . . .you play some really great videos/songs.  Whatever title you choose, I wish you good luck with your new show.  So far, I like what I've seen.

[We aim to please!]

hello dearest fuse,

i'm sure you are keenly aware of the growing number of individuals, including myself, who have pledged to expend as much effort as possible towards the destruction of pop music and proliferate the concept of harder, actual music. with this in mind i think it was a stroke of genius to create a show exclusively dedicated such genres as punk, emo, screamo, hardcore, post-hardcore, indie, and in gerneral rock. the reinstitution of rock music as an essential to everyday life for the teen world is as noble and badass a cause as any, and for that i salute you. oh, and i don't know what the you should name it, i like anti-pop personally.

Nick (this is my mother's e-mail)

[Nick's such a thoughtful boy...and evidently, a mama's boy. But we love him anyway!]
