In May 2008 Efterklang & Slaraffenland were on a joint US tour under the name The Danish Dynamite Tour. Halfway through the tour the bands got a call from back home. The newly established Sono Festival wanted to hear if Slaraffenland and Efterklang could be interested in performing a special concert at their festival. After a very quick talk on the topic it was decided that everyone would love to play in a band with two drummers and a lot of distorted guitars and therefore the offer was accepted.
The 4 songs on this free live EP are all recorded at Sono Festival in Roedovre (a suburb to Copenhagen) November 8th 2008. This was the first and maybe also the last concert with Slaraffenklang. The idea is simple and fun. Slaraffenklang is the mutant band of Efterklang and Slaraffenland. There are 12 musicians on stage, all men, and the songs performed are covers of Efterklang and Slaraffenland. Sometimes just louder and more rumbling versions and sometimes in new slightly new arrangements.

Come Back To The Five And Dime, Bobby Dee Bobby Dee, the second full-length album from D.C. musician Benjy Ferree, gives Bobby Driscoll a recognition that is long overdue: a musical eulogy to a forgotten child star who was chewed up and spit out by the unforgiving Hollywood meat market. Driscoll was a natural subject for Ferree as Peter Pan wasn't just an entertaining fictional character during Ferree's youth - he was an obsession. As a child, Ferree spent countless hours imitating the mischievous, magical child adventurer. His eventual discovery of Driscoll's sad fate led to this album - an ode not just to his childhood hero, but to anyone who's gotten the short end of the stick in life - with Driscoll renewing his role as the leader of life's ignored Lost Boys.

Bosque Brown have been quietly working on their sophomore full-length for the past 15 months with producer Chris Flemmons (Baptist Generals) in Denton, TX. Vocals are a focal point of Baby with these vocals, often Miller's vocals doubled up or harmonizing with her sister Gina, contrasting with varying percussive sounds from the drums, piano, and keyboard.

Without Morrissey and The Smiths, the content on this blog (and popular music itself) would be very different today. "Indie," as we know it, would be missing a bit of its DNA. Sure, there were some groups that had jangly guitars bouncing around the UK at the time, but none that executed so well with such a dynamic (and controversial) lyricist and vocalist. Not to mention Johnny Marr's guitar. Check out the deets on this new comp and the stream below.
Rhino announces the release of THE SOUND OF THE SMITHS, a new collection of classic and rare recordings that will be available November 11. The compilation was completed with the full cooperation of Morrissey, who provided the title, and Johnny Marr, who personally supervised the mastering. They both assisted in the track selection, and their joint involvement ensures that this will be the most comprehensive look back at The Smiths' extraordinary career to date.

A-ha! I can finally post an approved MP3 for you guys from the Little Joy LP and it just happens to be the one I play nearly every week on my SIRIUS show. How fitting, no? Little Joy played the Troubadour here in Los Angeles last night and are still making the rounds before heading to Europe in '09. Great, great stuff.
