Ten New Fan Tattoos - From Wisconsin to Sweden

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 11:36 PM

Martin Luther King, Jr. is quoted as saying, "Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted."

I think he would have enjoyed hanging with our fans.

It goes without saying that we feel greatly complimented whenever we see ink dedicated to the band, but you may not know quite how much it means to me.

Being a textbook case, a card-carrying victim of Seasonal Affective Disorder, there are certain low moments in the winter when I can be found indisposed in the corner of some crooked cafe, contemplating faking my own kidnapping-- looking online at the cost of one-way chartered passage via cargo ship to the Stone Forests of Madagascar--   slumping over my Blackberry researching maritime law, extradition, and the strength of U.S. dollars to Malagasy Francs--

During these short episodes I try to remember Denzel Washington's advice from Training Day: "Breathe, dog, breathe" - of course that was just after he'd shot the guy in the sternum--  Point being, nothing elevates my mood faster than a spirited display of dedication from a fan--- I save a lot of those email attachments, and I'd like to say thank you, and to share some of the recent ones that I happen to have handy:

    STATEMENT FROM THE BAND:

Promise Me is the most honest, deeply personal song we have ever released. Stylistically, it doesn’t fit anywhere on the album, so we put on LAST. It has no drumbeat, no guitar, no bass, and no bombastic “radio-friendly” chorus. It’s sparse and eerie and sad.

It was the LAST track anyone at the label ever thought could be a “single”. The fans, though, have REFUSED to let it go unnoticed. In the months since Wake Up the Sleepers was released, we’ve received more heartfelt feedback, worldwide, about Promise Me than ANY other song on the record.

People who only know Kill Hannah from songs like Lips Like Morphine or Kennedy may not realize that the band formed in a college dormroom over a decade ago. At that time, all we had was a tiny core of weird fans, and access to the gear in the Film Dept at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Before we were ever concerned with the politics of record labels, radio or touring, we were recording 10-minute shoegazer-y sound “pieces” and cutting them to grainy, independent art films on Super8. Not only do we look back on those days with a lot of pride, but after 7 years of relentless international touring, we found ourselves NEEDING to get back to that simpler, uncorrupted state of mind:

Promise Me became the perfect excuse.

There was only one problem: The label refused to fund a video. “It doesn’t make sense… commercially.”

We hung up the phone and called in every favor we possibly could. We assembled a large crew of Chicago’s most talented, pyromaniac friends to donate their time-- And over the course of 48 hours we marched all over the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city… without permits.

So, in the end, not only is this my favorite Kill Hannah video for my favorite Kill Hannah song, but it has also become a SYMBOL-- for how, without any help from the “music industry”, good people can get together and pull off a wild achievement.

Thank you to all in Chicago who got involved; Those who got cut and bruised and burned, for the sake of friendship…

AND, most of all, THANK YOU to the fans… For reminding us WHO WE ARE, and for refusing to let us take the most predictable path.

    Xo

    Dear Mom. Part 1.

    Dear Mom,

That squirrel that hung out at my window on Xmas? The one I thought was so cute? Turns out it's a total asshole.

Do you realize, he only eats Japanese organic raw 'nonpareil' almonds now? I thought I was giving him something special these last few days-- Turns out the rest of 10014 has been treating this fucker to the high life for years.  Won't even touch my 'Mountain Blueberry' flax clusters!

I sat on the fire escape like a godamn idiot this morning, waiting 10min for His Highness to meander over to me-- I had to gain his trust and all that-- the ritual--hopping closer , closer, closerrrr. Me saying "Hiiiiii budddyyyyy--" in a high-pitched wuss voice. Then, he sniffs my offering, finds it lacking, and bounds off. Believe that shit?

Now I actually find myself in some boutique nut store on Madison Ave, totally emasculated, looking for some fucking expensive seed 'dusted with Essence of Elderflowers' that some barefoot centurion sherpa hand-picked off an ancient Bonsai tree on the top of Mt Fuji or whatever.

I know I know-- I haven't even had "one free moment" to send Xmas cards to Sarah or Bek yet-- but that's what makes me mad. I feel like this fluffy vermin somehow made me his bitch. (sorry. 'patsy'.) Call me later?  XO mat

Top 25 YouTube Clips I Watched in 2010

    Mat and matb

Like you, I happily bombarded my retinas with thousands of YouTube videos in 2010.

Generally, I ascribe the word "GREAT" to those select clips which either moved me emotionally, inspired me artistically, or enlightened me intellectually.

Those even rarer clips to which I'll bestow "CLASSIC" status, however, have reliably emerged under one of two even more distinguished categories:

    1. Animal Antics

    2. Stupid People Getting Fucked

The 25 i’ve compiled here cover the full spectrum. It's a New Year's peace offering-- a cheap Olive Garden appetizer to those loyal Raccoons who've been waiting vigilantly for me to finish cooking up something more substantive.

Enjoy. Keep eating your vegetables. Audaci Favet Fortuna.

    xo Love, Mat
