Daredevil Spiders and Existential Dilemmas. PLUS the Mayans Predicted Screamo Crunk

Posted on June 30, 2009 at 02:01 PM

Listening to: Rex the dog The Knife Heartbeats remix

Eating: eggs and avocado and Vicodin

Drinking : lager mornings and Claret afternoons

Heard another crash outside my window last night. Living next to a lethal intersection, I have dreams that the ghosts climb up the side of my building 14 floors and into my room, into my bed. The sound of screeching tires, then crashing glass and sirens always sirens…

Why are there no public service announcements for Drunk Netflixing? It must be recognized as a harmful activity. Opened my mailbox today to find Twilight, Pi, and Millers Crossing. Wtf. No memory whatsoever of ordering those.

    Scooter 2 sized

Another ticket on my ghetto scooter. WTF How? I was literally sitting inches away at a Starbucks the entire time! these crafty ninja cops are getting very Minority Report lately. Eerie. I have to say I’m quite impressed. Rode fast for a mile with the ticket flapping violently on the mirror until it tore off and disappeared. That takes care of that.

I’m in a rare pocket of time post-mix/pre-tour, and although we have photo shoots and vids to prep for this week, as well as rehearsals and a full international setup for what will be our biggest and best album ever, I’m in a strange sad existential mental state. I think it’s simply because the last few months were so fucking relentless, and the voids that follow chaos are nauseating. Sometimes its easier in a frantic state to distract oneself from real life, then when it hits you, it really hits you. I remember my first and only skydiving experience. There was a massive rush of adrenaline, then the guy strapped to my ass like a Siamese twin deployed the shoot and we floated, bored, for 3 min, we landed, I walked behind a tree and puked.

starting my mornings the same with eggs and avocado and a hacker pschorr beer. Read more about Byron's orgies and duels in Istanbul and Greece- bought a book of random facts and learned that a human head will stay conscious for 15 seconds after being decapitated by guillotine. -became WAY too preoccupied with that thought for WAY too long.  Got depressed. Started thinking of my age in terms of days, not years.. wonder why I never thought to throw a 10,000-day-old party when I was 27. Could have been the greatest party of all time. Fuck.

    Spider window sized

Watched a spider make a web outside my window for an hour. Struggling to find the meaning in anything, i signed onto Myspace, and that's when the universe punched me in the dick by immediately streaming a new Brokencyde video. Oh wow. Is this real life? I laughed. I cried. In small violent spurts. My bitter face always returning to a perma-cringe. The Mayans predicted the end of days to be 2012, maybe they were just off by a few years?

Regardless, it’s a sign…an omen. Like a swarm of locusts, only much much more annoying. Thank you, Great Architect… I understand perfectly. my mission is clear, and there isn’t a moment to lose.  have to fix this shit. we have to return the music industry to its former glory. The golden age when the public had faith in media outlets and some songs were… actually… songs. Status: Reinvigorated.

Mentally prepping for July 4th when our proud nation of pyromaniacs will celebrate independence and raise our glasses to honor those brave revolutionaries and original terrorists (O.T.’s) we call our founding fathers. Light match, stand away.

If you have drivers license issues, I could help you get your license back. That is my job and I have a good record helping with this issue, but I would not charge you a dime. It would be my pleasure to help you out for all the pleasure your music has brought us.

Saw you in St. Paul last night, your show was romantic as hell, thank you for the love and for taking the time to talk with me. The new music is killer, see you in September.

Jenna on July 13, 2009 at 01:53 PM

It does so make me happy when you post, it's always interesting. And even gives the (illusion?) impression of being planned out. Listening to the beautifully gifted new version of New York City Speed. I am in awe- you have lived up to 2 of your post announcements. I think my speakers are properly gushing gold, and music has been (at least temporarily) been brought back to grace. Thanks! (waiting for progress on global warming.)

haha I totally understand the sirens thing! i live right near a friggin hospital! I dont get the crashes and all that jazz much but the sirens and the cheeky bastards who drive the ambulances from the hospital switch them on right as they pull onto my street always scaring the living hell out of me! LOL
hee-hee i love your lil scooter your description of driving until your ticket blew away made me laugh.
You definitly need to throw a big partay to make up for not celebrating your 10,000-days-old. Do it in the UK though so brit fans can all come along we always miss out on the fun stuff over in chicago!
take care Mat. Dont stress yourself out too much. Can't wait for the new album its gonna be totally awesome!

Amanda on July 2, 2009 at 03:18 PM

    Lord Byron!
Class .. his a brilliant writer..

Did you get that a a gift in the UK???

Ema on July 2, 2009 at 02:38 PM

mmm existential dilemmas. I deal with them on a daily basis and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. All I have to say is nihilistic is the way to go. unless you find yourself wanting something more. n____n keep the faith.

"I understand perfectly. my mission is clear, and there isn’t a moment to lose. have to fix this shit. we have to return the music industry to its former glory."
you should write things for tombstones. they'd be more interesting.
and hurry up with the damn album. i'm running out of things to listen to.

andie on July 1, 2009 at 06:59 PM

Screw the tour come to Brazil for a vacation instead!

Cher on July 1, 2009 at 05:50 PM

Sounds like the police actualy DO something in Chicago. Here, they just sit around.. actualy, tehy dont go on duty till 7pm! ...
But i suppose Chicago is a city, whilst my town is barely a town..
    more of a village.

    anyway.
I thaught that spider was attacking the sears tower.
just came up with the new King Kong film.
    =0D

    Brokencyde?
    unlucky

ellie on July 1, 2009 at 04:47 PM

I hadn't even heard of BrokeNCYDE before you mentioned them. I sent that pic with the spider to my mom in Chicago and told her to watch out for the invasion...

Emily on July 1, 2009 at 03:40 PM

Wow... The view from your window is fascinating! If I had a window like that I would sit there every evening and just relax, think and write. In fact I get inspired to write poems when I see that pic and when I read your blog.

    :)

Lydia on July 1, 2009 at 01:27 PM

I was JUST crying over the brokeNYCDE video the other day...it just made me extremely sad for music, probably because I discovered that monstrosity of a band so close to Michael Jackson passing away...

In other news...I'm so excited for the new album!! What's the release date on it?

Ashley on July 1, 2009 at 08:55 AM
judy on July 1, 2009 at 02:17 AM

    lmao! brokencyde....i feel your pain.

Sounds to me like youre going through a premature midlife crisis? I hope not, maybe I'm exaggerating your blog...What ever happen to Carpe Diem? It's never too late to have that party :) maybe for the fourth of july?

As always, you're words are always intriguing...

I'm jealous of your scooter. I've wanted a Vespa for the longest time, and it doesn't help that there's a sea foam colored vespa parked in front of campus every morning.

judy on July 1, 2009 at 01:43 AM

All I can say is wow. You know what else is going to destroy our existence besides Brokencyde? Keyboard phones. I press shift on a phone keyboard, and I get an apostrophe. I press shift on a computer keyboard, I get quotations. I have lost all skill for typing. I hope that makes you feel better.

Erica on July 1, 2009 at 01:24 AM

    Sounds like a fun time...

I really enjoyed reading this... Your writing style is so... smooth and simply. Very sexy...

P.S. Let's throw a party for you when you reach another long span of days!

Jynrya on July 1, 2009 at 01:01 AM

I guess you'll just have to start planning now for your 20,000-day-old party.
You should definately keep with the trend and watch the netflix movies drunk.

frelll on July 1, 2009 at 12:26 AM

    That spider is freaking HUGE!

RobinRenee on June 30, 2009 at 11:09 PM

Recommending The God Delusion by the brilliant Richard Dawkins. It will clear any and all brain sinuses. Btw there is no master architect but there is awe inspiring evolution. You will never be depressed again. Never stop feeding your brain with real life knowledge it will set you free from trivialness.

    h on June 30, 2009 at 10:18 PM

One can tell you're near the peak by your grammar splurts. Ironic my friend was just complaining about Brokencyde today as well.
You've lived in Chicago long enough you should have ninja hiding skills from those ninja cops <,< I hope your spirits are raised and you have a good 4th :] I'm still excited for the album.

Hope on June 30, 2009 at 09:56 PM

dude, Mat, dear, just remember you are doing what you love and there is room for downtime. I have been unemployed since 05, cept a few temp jobs orver the two summers that have past. Try scrapping money to go to see your family in the great white north, Ontario Canada and lacking hope in doing such a thing this July, tomorrow is Canada day, I'd rather see the last few rainy days of July 1st with family then being here. Then again it's July 4th time to celebrate for once I suppose.
I've been hit with depression from down days, been knitting up a frenzy to past the non productive days away. So many hopes and dreams and I to ponder the days of my age and where the days went. Saw that on the history channel of 2012, remeber those days they showed us films of nuclear warfare when we were younger?
I will be 37 next month Mat! It's going to be alright dude!
    :P

Brokencyde are a disgrace to music...
The picture of the spider made me jump xD

Claire on June 30, 2009 at 05:41 PM

    ARGH SPIDER :[

    *weep*

    Creatures of evilness!

Lol at the scooter ticket. They know, they just.. know. :S

I haven't subjected my ears to Brokencyde or others of that ilk. I hope it stays that way.

    xx

Lydiaaa [KHK - UK] on June 30, 2009 at 05:40 PM

Thinking of you, Mat - you sound in a similar headspace to me. I knew this year would suck on about the 12th of January, and I'm yet to be proven wrong. However, hearing your album is one positive to look forward to. Hopefully once you're out on tour things will feel a bit brighter

Andi on June 30, 2009 at 04:01 PM

Save yourself, send Twilight back unwatched! If you really must see it, have a stiff drink first and giggle your way through the creepy stalkery bits and the dazzling.
Although, speaking of dazzling, have you ever thought of updating your stage look, doing away with the under-eye white lines and wearing sparkly body glitter instead? Your fans would go wild! ;-P

You're ignoring parking tickets again??? Tsk tsk.

    Helen B (Eleanor's mum) on June 30, 2009 at 03:45 PM

Brokencyde reminds me of why I have barely any faith in humanity and music.
Brokencyde and Adam Lambert losing American Idol...the worst of music and people.
Anyways love to hear from you!

Jackie on June 30, 2009 at 03:33 PM

I felt the same way in Newport this past weekend-much the same but everything different. I missed the Alfa terribly, having a good memory can be so much worse than having none at all. You would have reveled in the abundance of fog, ocean and wealthy yacht club women...Huey Lewis and the News playing in the big tent in town was just a bonus. P.S. This doesn't make me a minion!

Tomaso on June 30, 2009 at 03:33 PM

Lmao. Nooos. Police aren't allowed to be ninjaaaas! XP Cuz ninjas are cool =D

That's probably one of the most important things you've ever written.

Ava Adore on June 30, 2009 at 03:12 PM

hmmm, mat, your sounding a lot more depressed lately. hope all is well, or at least gets better soon. either way, your mind is a wonderful place, and im glad to have a way to read your thoughts, if only for a couple minutes. simply cannot wait for the new album, if i recieved a copy before it was released, i probably would not complain.
