Adele’s album 21 and its hit soul single “Rolling in the Deep” owned 2011, but it was Kanye West–against all predictions–who ruled the nominations for the 54th annual GRAMMY Awards, which were announced tonight during an hour-long concert event at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre. As if the Chicago rapper's ego needed further inflation, the Academy rewarded him with seven total nods, including Song of the Year, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Album. Adele, Foo Fighters, and Bruno Mars each scored six nods, while Lil Wayne and Skrillex each nabbed five.
Bon Iver–yes, the little indie band that could Bon Iver!–scored four nominations, including the prestigious Record and Song of the Year. Way to go, Bon Iver. The Band Perry, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj, and Skrillex will vie for Best New Artist. While Adele, Foo Fighters, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, and Rihanna will battle for the sought-after Album of the Year throne.

Are you a recording artist wondering how best to secure your place as a nominee on the primetime GRAMMY Awards? (Or at least score a seat at the non-televised GRAMMY ceremony where they hand out trophies for sweet categories like Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media?) Sure you are! So we asked National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences president Neil Portnow to give us some DOs and DON’Ts of landing a GRAMMY nomination.

You can’t fault Rihanna’s work ethic, but with two albums in a year – and a handful of guest shots, a bunch of provocative videos and a big world tour – is there just too much Rihanna? NISHA GOPALAN takes a closer look.
Rihanna just dropped her sixth studio album, Talk That Talk, presently ensconced in the No. 1 slot. Its release culminated a year of relentless tabloid coverage for her raunchy live shows, appearances on albums from Coldplay and Nicki Minaj, plus a video for the single "We Found Love" that was banned well before Talk dropped. (Its not-so-subtle depiction of the singer in a destructive relationship with an abusive boyfriend rubbed the French censorship board the wrong way.)
In her six(ish)-year-long career, Rihanna has moved a staggering 20+ million albums and has been nominated for 13 Grammy awards (she won four of those). Her work ethic is tireless—as indefatigable, perhaps, as her need for attention. In fact, her drive is reminiscent of that other great button-pusher, her idol Madonna. And like the Material Girl, towards whom the public has oscillated between fascination and contempt, one wonders if Rihanna isn’t likewise approaching saturation point.

Time to shift gears a bit and take some time to honor those who missed the mark this year. We know they did their best, but some videos really just fell short. So tell us — What was the WORST music video of 2011?
@106th says: so many BAD videos, hard to pick THE WORST.. but I think Gaga's "Edge of Glory" was pretty lackluster for such a big song #FuseTop40
@ddyw says: Worst video - THE LAZY SONG. I THOUGHT I could watch Bruno Mars in anything. Wrong. #fusetop40
@missfranzman says: Definitely 'Moves Like Jagger' it's so obvious!
@IsabelLane612 says: As a new artist Dev needs all the help she can get so I'm convinced "In the Dark" was some kind of sabotage #fusetop40
Top 20 host Allison weighs in on the topic:
See more of the Top 40 Superlatives: Which 2011 music video...
•Needs to be watched more than once to be appreciated?
•Was the most scandalous?
•Changed your mind about an artist or song?

It’s that time again: Tonight, during a concert event hosted by LL Cool J and broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences will announce the nominees for the 54th annual GRAMMY Awards Ceremony, triggering “He was snubbed!” and “What do the GRAMMYS even mean anymore?” rants from pop pundits and fans aplenty. But before you get into a fist fight over the number of nods Sugarland did or didn’t receive, let’s first address a more pressing question: Where the hell did the GRAMMYS even come from? FUSE has the answer. We retraced the history of the ceremony, from its humble beginnings in the early-1950s to its current status as the Biggest Night in Music. Watch the video above!
