Hip Hop Pioneer Sylvia Robinson Dies at Age 75

Sylvia Robinson, musician, founder of Sugar Hill Records and producer of groundbreaking hits "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang and "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, died Thursday in New Jersey. She was 75.

The New York native had her first hit, "Love Is Strange," with guitarist Mickey Baker, billed as Mickey & Sylvia. The 1957 song enjoyed a second wave of popularity after being featured in the 1987 film "Dirty Dancing." In 1973, Robinson's solo single "Pillow Talk" became a crossover disco smash on the R&B and pop charts.

Robinson went on to found Sugar Hill Records with her husband, Joe, and partners Milton Malden and Morris Levy. She was instrumental in forming the Sugarhill Gang, and produced their song "Rapper's Delight," hip hop's first hit, in 1979. She is also credited with convincing Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five to record their socially conscious 1982 single, "The Message."

The "mother of hip hop" and her husband got out of the music business in the mid-'80s, after closing Sugar Hill Records and selling their Chess Records catalog.

She had been ill for several months, and died Thursday morning from congestive heart failure in a Secaucus, New Jersey hospital, Sister 2 Sister reports.
