The Gaslight Anthem With Bruce Springsteen

Posted on June 30, 2009 at 03:56 PM

The Boss helps out the Gaslight Anthem during their Glastonbury appearance. The song, of course, is "Sound of '59." Given this, and his guest spot with Phish, it looks like Springsteen is getting the hang of the whole 'festival' thing. Watch before someone has this taken down.

Today's Michael Jackson News

Posted on June 30, 2009 at 02:24 PM

In today's MJ news, his albums are selling quite a few copies, his doctor may be in trouble, and photos of the final dress rehearsal of the This Is It show have emerged. To say the least, it's weird to look at them.

Billboard: Nielsen SoundScan's sales numbers won't be released until Wednesday (July 1) morning, but industry prognosticators indicate that three of Jackson's albums -- "Number Ones," "The Essential Michael Jackson" and "Thriller" -- each sold around 100,000 copies last week. The sales tracking week ended at the close of business on Sunday (June 28) night.

To compare, Jackson's entire catalog of solo albums sold 10,000 in the week that ended June 21.

AP: The doctor rode with Jackson in the ambulance and assisted emergency room doctors in trying to revive the pop star, Chernoff said. After he was pronounced dead, Murray spoke with Jackson's siblings LaToya and Jermaine, and spoke briefly with Jackson's mother, he told CNN.

Jackson's children asked to see their father after he died and, after a consultation with a psychiatrist, they were allowed to see him, Chernoff said.

Rolling Stone: The images — taken by photographer Kevin Mazur on behalf of AEG Live, who were producing Jackson’s This Is It! shows — show a gaunt but smiling Jackson practicing his choreography with his back-up dancers. The shots also provide a peek at what the 750,000 who purchased tickets to the London shows could have expected to see starting in July, as the show was reportedly going to feature more than two dozen sets and countless wardrobe changes (including the pictured Moonwalker wardrobe) as Jackson’s performance spanned his career of hits.

Dirty Projectors Take To The Hills

Posted on June 30, 2009 at 09:30 AM

Making 70s style, prog-influenced videos went out of style after Robert Plant galloped around the Welsh countryside in Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains The Same. But it's been awhile, so what's stopping some hot young band from shooting a video on a mountainside on a gray, misty day? Nothing, say the Dirty Projectors, and director Matthew Lessner, who bring us a vid for Bitte Orca's "Stillness Is The Move" featuring the band's female members as siren-like, vocalist twirlers, and guitarist/songwriter Dave Longstreth as a llama-herding minstrel. Brooklyn looks different in this video.  [via Stereogum]

Video Hotness: Black Eyed Peas Extended Interviews

Posted on June 29, 2009 at 04:56 PM

Your happy ears and shaking rump have probably already made you aware that the Black Eyed Peas have a new album out, but just in case you didn't: The Black Eyed Peas have a new album out! Tonight at 7p ET on Fuse we're examining BEP: Then and Now. It's a nice look back at the band's history and takes a deep peek into the making of the new album.

Lucky for us (and you guys) all that good interview footage that didn't quite make it into the show has found a happy home right here! Check out bunches of clips with the band in our video portal, and enjoy this clip in which the band explains how the new album differs from the old. Namely, their previous works were slightly less insistent in the "get-your-ass-on-the-floor-and-dance" area.

Love that? Good. Make sure to head on in to watch lots more, and be TRIPLE sure to watch BEP: Then and Now tonight at 7p ET. You will be sad if you miss it. And sadness is the Black Eyed Peas' mortal enemy.

Pixies To Bring Doolittle To Europe

Posted on June 29, 2009 at 03:10 PM

Twenty years ago, the Pixies releaed Doolittle, their best album, unless you consider Surfer Rosa to be their best album. Or Bossa Nova. Or Trompe Le Monde.

Whatever your opinion, it's effin' sweet that the Pixies will be hitting this road this fall to play Doolittle in its entirety. That's not all—the shows will also feature performances of every related B-side. The tour hits the UK and Europe in October. Tickets go on sale Friday morning. Airplane tickets (for various flights to Europe, and indeed, anywhere else) on sale now!

Paul McCartney Joins Neil Young Onstage In London

Posted on June 29, 2009 at 12:17 PM

It was a hell of a weekend to be a music fan in England. The Glastonbury Festival, including a performance from the reunited Blur, took place. Bruce Springsteen played two big shows, one at Glastonbury, where he opened with Joe Strummer's "Coma Girl," and one last night at Hyde Park, London, where he opened with London Calling.

Also at Hyde Park this weekend was Neil Young, who played the London park one night after headlining Glastonbury. The legend has closed many concerts in recent years with a cover of the Beatles' "A Day In The Life." The song appeared at his show Saturday night. Also appearing? Paul McCartney. Paul is ecstatic to be there. The crowd? They, as they say, go wild.

The Michael Jackson News Continues

Posted on June 29, 2009 at 10:31 AM

Now that the shock has somewhat worn off, the world is turning to asking questions about Michael Jackson and his final months, and also the future: his funeral, his finances, his children. The Daily Mail in the UK has a fascinating, empathetic article on the state of Jackson's physical health and state of mind in the last year of his life. The title itself, a quote from Jackson, is riveting: "I'm better off dead. I'm done." Some of the items:

  • Jackson may have had a condition that affected his lungs, and was responsible for respiratory problems.
  • Jackson was planning to lipsync at the concerts. He could dance, but his singing voice was gone.
  • Jackson's debt was/is estimated to be at 242 millions pounds.
  • Jackson left over 200 unpublished songs to his children to ensure their financial security.

There are also bits about Jackson's lovers, his anorexic condition, and the plethora of painkillers Jackson regularly took. In his final months, Jackson began comparing himself to Elvis Presley. Sadly, their respective ends were more ignoble than either deserved.

Michael Jackson: A Look Back

Posted on June 26, 2009 at 05:14 PM

Take a look back at the life of Michael Jackson with Fuse Noise. This is just a bit of the Michael Jackson programming we'll be running on TV all the way through tomorrow afternoon, so tune in and watch the King of Pop do what he did best: entertain your socks off.

I remember trying as hard as I could to memorize that whole Vincent Price monologue at the beginning of "Thriller" so I could yell it out while my little brother and I ran around the basement pretending to destroy zombies with our killer dance moves but I never quite got the whole thing right.

Man, missing Michael Jackson makes me write run-on sentences.

Got stories, too? Who doesn't? We built some pages last night so you can share your thoughts, watch a whole bunch of classic videos, and remember the King of Pop.

Michael Jackson—The Day After

Posted on June 26, 2009 at 12:13 PM

It's still difficult to process. The King Of Pop, dead at 50. Will there ever be a pop culture figure as famous as Michael? The world is a different place than it was in the 70s and 80s, when Jackson became the world's most famous musical figure. There were fewer entertainment choices, fewer channels of distribution, as those in the biz say. Today, with an avalanche of entertainment vying for the attention of consumers, and with the culture of microcelebrity flourishing, it's impossible for anyone to reach the level of fame that Jackson did. Jackson might be the last megastar. It may be for the best.

And no matter what you thought of Jackson's eccentricities, or his legal troubles, or his financial difficulties, put his best music up against anyone's. It's untouchable. Listen to the layers and near-otherworldly vocal performance on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'." The unstoppable rhythms of "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough." The pure joy of "I Want You Back." Imagine the last forty years of pop music without Jackson. You can't.

We've got MJ all day on Fuse (tv). And we've got videos and more here. Go here and leave thoughts, memories... anything. Or do it below. And the news, of course, continues to pour in:

An obituary in the LA Times.

Steven Spielberg: "Just as there will never be another Fred Astaire or Chuck Berry or Elvis Presley, there will never be anyone comparable to Michael Jackson. His talent, his wonderment and his mystery make him legend." [New York Times]

Gawker has a collection of newspaper front pages from around the world.

Billboard: Jackson's death and the subsequent cancellation of the London shows is a "major problem" for concert promoter AEG.

BBC: Many fans who purchased tickets for the London shows via a third party broker may never receive a refund.

Here's a history of Jackson's performance on the Billboard charts.

In January, it was reported that Jackson's will may stipulate that the rights to the Beatles catalog, owned by Jackson since the 80s, be left to Paul McCartney.

The music world mourns.

Wilco On Conan

Posted on June 25, 2009 at 12:03 PM

So is everyone calling The Tonight Show "Conan?" Wilco dropped by Conan last night to play standout Wilco (The Album) track "You Never Know" for a television and web (that's you) audience. The album doesn't even drop until Tuesday, but it leaked early, prompting Wilco to post a legal stream. All of which means that "everyone" has their favorite album tracks, even though the album isn't yet out. And "everyone" would agree that "You Never Know" owes more than a bit of its charm to the sound and spirit of George Harrison. And they wore the nudie suits!

Wilco (The Album) is out Tuesday on Nonesuch.

Elliott Smith's Car Is For Sale

Posted on June 25, 2009 at 11:36 AM

Need a new used car? You could do worse than a '99 Passat, a solid and stylish car popular, apparently, with indie singer-songwriters, or, at least, Elliott Smith.

Smith passed away in 2003, but the car has remained in the family since. Now, according to Pitchfork, Smith's sister is selling the car. If you're in or near Austin, you can have the car for $4000. Not a bad deal on its own, but it gets better: the money will be donated to SIMS, a foundation committed to providing "access to and financial support for mental health and addiction recovery services for Austin-area musicians and their families." So what are you waiting for? Buy this car.

Dirty Projectors In Van Accident, Are OK

Posted on June 24, 2009 at 11:41 AM

Flippedvan

It's the worst nightmare of any touring band, and anyone whose job forces them to spend considerable time on the road: a flipped vehicle. It happened to the Dirty Projectors in Michigan yesterday. The band were on their way to Toronto for a show, which has since (along with tonight's scheduled Montreal show) been canceled.

Here's the band's official statement:

We're O.K.!!!

Hi everyone

Some of you may have heard that we were in a pretty serious accident today. We are all pretty much fine- all walking and talking and all of that- just a little sore and a little shaken.

After stopping at a fruit stand at about 3pm today, we got back on the highway headed towards Toronto. At about 3:15, on the other side of the highway, a semi-truck moved into the left lane, not seeing the car that was there, and sent the car flying out of control over the meridian and right at us. The car hit us in the back and sent us flying onto our side, at which point we slid quite a ways down the road. Everyone was wearing a seatbelt except for Dave and Brian, but they and all of the rest of us luckily came out fine!

The whole thing was quite surreal; there were hugs and tears when we climbed out of the van. We all feel very fortunate right now to be walking around. Sorry about the canceled shows in Toronto and Montreal! We were really looking forward to coming up there again, but we will make it up to you as soon as possible!

Thank you for your concern and support. Looking forward to getting back out there and continuing to share music with our fans.

Presumably, the band's west coast dates, set to commence July 2 in Vancouver, will go on as planned. And remember, no matter how high your Pitchfork rating is, wear your f*cking seatbelt.

Oxford Collapse Break Up :-(

Posted on June 24, 2009 at 10:49 AM

Oc No band can stay together forever (except, perhaps, the Blind Boys Of Alabama), but it's still sad to reach the end of an era. The Oxford Collapse, a Brooklyn pop/punk/postpunk/near-prog trio with an endlessly melodic catalog, is calling it quits after four albums, two with Kanine, two with Sub Pop. Says the band:

"After eight years, 450 shows, and four albums, we’ve decided that we’ve reached the end of the line.  To paraphrase the Grateful Dead, “what a long, strange, eye-opening, stomach-bursting, heart-breaking, bittersweet, educational, enlightening, mind-numbing, ‘why-are-we-doing-this-shit?’/‘who-gets-to-do-this-shit?,’ absurd, amazing trip it’s been.”  To paraphrase another sage poet, “you gotta know when to hold ‘em and know when to fold ‘em.” To quote G. G. Allin, “life sucks, scum fuc.”

According to MySpace, their current mood is "sad." So is ours. The band has two final shows: July 17th at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ (with Frightened Rabbit) and July 18th at Under The Tracks in New York. Remember the night parties, everyone.

Kate Moss Destroys New Kills Tracks

Posted on June 23, 2009 at 11:13 AM

Kills - no wow Kate Moss, in a fit of anger, sent boyfriend and Kills songwriter Jamie Hince's "man purse" spiraling down to a watery grave this past weekend.

The location? The swimming pool at Moss's English home. The contents of the purse? Hince's BlackBerry, diary, and laptop. On the laptop? Six newly recorded Kills tracks.

Hince immediately dived in after the bag. The diary was salvaged. The BlackBerry, though, was gone. And the laptop? Beyond saving.

Hince, understandably, was "livid." Moss, presumably, was sheepish. According to the Guardian, a source reports, "[Hince] kept yelling, 'Why would you do such a f*cking stupid thing?! You're acting like a fishwife!'"

Which raises the question: What exactly is a fishwife?

Iggy Pop, Fatboy Slim On Letterman

Posted on June 23, 2009 at 10:00 AM

Norman Cook has had no shortage of musical outlets of a two decade-plus career. First, he was a bassist for English socialist poppers the Housemartins. When that band dissolved, he turned to his first love, DJing, before developing his big beat persona Fatboy Slim.

Cook's latest project is the Brighton Port Authority, a collective led by Cook and featuring contributions from David Byrne, Pete Yorn, Martha Wainwright, Emmy the Great and Iggy Pop, who lends vocals to a cover of the Monochrome Set's 1979 Rough Trade single "He's Frank."

Cook and Pop appeared on Letterman last night to perform the tune. Check out Fatboy Slim himself on bass, picking up the instrument he played with soulful spunk in the Housemartins.

High energy cover, but the vocals seem almost sedate. Still, the low range gives us the chance to hear that menacing Iggy scowl. Less for comparison's sake and more for the fun of it, here's The Monochrome Set performing the song on British TV in the early 90s. Guitarist's name is Lester Square. Amazing.

Chris Brown In Plea Deal; Rihanna Doesn't Testify

Posted on June 23, 2009 at 09:42 AM

In the end, Rihanna's testimony wasn't needed.

Chris Brown, the singer accused of beating ex-gf Rihanna, plead guilty in an LA court yesterday, avoiding jail time. However, he must perform 180 hours of labor in Virginia, his home state. According to TMZ, that labor includes picking up trash, pulling weeds, and washing fire trucks. Here's what Brown's looking at:

  • - 180 hours of hard labor
  • - Five years probation for Felony assault
  • - Brown must check into court every three months
  • - Brown can no longer legally carry a gun or serve on a jury, is subject to search and seizure without a warrant, and has travel limitations
  • - He must keep fifty yards from Rihanna at all times, unless they're at the same event, in which the number is lessened to ten

Yikes. Yes, Brown avoided jail time, but the above is no walk in the park (unless he's in the park, picking up trash). And now, he's a convicted felon. Nice going, Chris Brown! You're awesome.

And, as promised, here are those Rihanna court sketches:

Crystal Castles Start Some Crystal Sh*t At Show

Posted on June 22, 2009 at 11:56 AM

Crystal Castles are known for their frenetic, near lunatic live shows. And singer Alice Glass is not known to take any crap. So one wouldn't expect Glass to take any crap during a Crystal Castles show.

Which is what happened Saturday night. Kinda.

Crystal Castles were barreling through their set at Barcelona's Sonar Festival when Glass, upset with the perceived poor sound, made for the bass drum, hoisted it, and attempted to toss it at security guards. The guards were not amused and restrained Glass, who took advantage of the close quarters to throw a punch.

Video here - the punch happens near the end—maybe. It's difficult to discern. The whole clip is crazy. Actually, this would make a good video. Someone make some YouTube magic!

Rihanna To Testify Today

Posted on June 22, 2009 at 09:23 AM

Today's the day! It's the first full day of summer, AND Rihanna is set to appear in court today—what a day, right? Rihanna, still just a wee 22 years of age, is expected to be called as a witness today by prosecutors making a case that she was attacked by Chris Brown.

Exciting, right? Here's the bad/sad news: the testimony will not be televised. Los Angeles Criminal Court judge Patricia Schnegg decided against televised testimony, leaving us all to depend on the talents of a sketch artist. By later today or tomorrow at the latest, we should know what Rihanna said on the stand. We should also have neat sketches of her.

Remember, Brown has publicly said he 'ain't a monster.' What do YOU think? Is Chris Brown a monster? Or ain't he?

Katy Perry vs. Katie Perry

Posted on June 19, 2009 at 09:43 AM

Katy perry One is a famous singer (known for pissing off Beth Ditto). The other is an emerging clothing designer. They have similar names and similar designs for trade-marking in Australia, thus setting the stage for an Aussie rules-style down under battle.

The issue is the name. Katie Perry the designer started a high end clothing line two years ago, naturally trademarking the line's eponymous name. Katy Perry the singer, or rather, her label EMI, sent the designer Perry a cease-and-desist letter, outlining the singer Perry's intent to trademark her name in Australia. They INTEND to trademark her name. They haven't even done it yet!

So who's right here? Katie, the Australia-based designer with the legit name and legit business who trademarked her name two years ago? Or Katy, the pop star from the other side of the world?

Twilight Singers, Apollonia Cover "When Doves Cry"

Posted on June 11, 2009 at 12:31 PM

Purpleraincover Everyone loves Purple Rain, Prince's soundtrack/album to the 1984, Prince-starring film of the same name. In the film, Prince plays The Kid, a Prince-like musician in Minneapolis (Prince's hometown) with designs on a Prince-like career. The movie's not so bad, but the soundtrack is stellar—one of the gerat albums of the 80s.

So why not put together a tribute album? That's what Spin magazine did. It's called Purplish Rain (clever), and they've just posted a track: a version of "When Doves Cry" by the Twilight Singers and Apollonia. Yes, the same Apollonia who was Prince's love interest in the movie, as well as in real life.

The version is dark, not a surprise given anything involving Greg Dulli. According to Dulli:

"It was a fun challenge. I can guarantee you that what we do sounds nothing like what you expect. The only thing you'll recognize is the lyrics."

He's right—this version is dark, with melancholy piano forming the foundation. Listen here. Full tracklisting:

1. "Let's Go Crazy" RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS
2. "Take Me With U" SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS
3. "The Beautiful Ones" FOL CHEN
4. "Computer Blue" OF MONTREAL
5. "Darling Nikki" CHAIRLIFT
6. "When Doves Cry" THE TWILIGHT SINGERS
7. "I Would Die 4 U" MARIACHI EL BRONX
8. "Baby I'm a Star" CRAIG WEDREN
9. "Purple Rain" LAVENDER DIAMOND
