I Need A Miracle Everyday

Posted on March 30, 2009 at 11:55 AM

CopyofGratefulDeadMovie2

Would you like to see the reunited Grateful Dead today? Oh good, because they're playing three shows in New York this evening - a 5pm show at Angel Orensanz on the Lower East Side, an 8pm set at the Gramercy Theatre in Gramercy, and an 11pm set at Roseland in Times Square. Warm-up your miracle finger, because these shows will be near-impossible to get into.

So, T.I. finally got sentenced for his conviction on federal weapons charges. Say goodbye to the rapper for a year and a day. See you in '10!

Don't judge Canadian music just because Nickelback was the big winner at last night's Juno Awards.

Everyone's Reuniting

Posted on March 27, 2009 at 10:18 AM

Tool

Its been awhile since Tool toured, so fans might be pretty happy about the fact that the band is heading out on the road this summer. Dates have yet to be announced, but a headlining slot at Lollapalooza looks to be in the cards.

Michael Jackson may ride an elephant during his upcoming London shows. And PETA are not happy about it.

Rock-hall-bug Remember Joseph Houston, the cop, make that ex-cop, who urinated on a fan at a Metallica show last year? He's been charged with Peeing. Actually, with assault and battery (Battery!) and also lewdness. Huston will be joining Metallica at the Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame ceremony on Saturday, April 4th. Just kidding, no, he won't. And speaking of Metallica, the video for "Broken, Beat and Scarred" has debuted over at Metallica's official site. No embed, so click here to watch.

And here is the amazing trailer for Where The Wild Things Are, featuring music by Arcade Fire.

Rock-hall-bug If you were one of those that thought that there was no way that Metallica could NOT be inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame and NOT perform at least a little bit with former bassist Jason Newsted, well then you... you were right. Word is that Newsted will perform at least part of the Metallica set. A medley of ...And Justice For All classics, perhaps? (Please?) Newsted was the subject of some relentless hazing by his bandmates over the years, so it's nice to see this happen. And bear in mind that Flea is inducting Metallica. Which means a whole lot of low-end will be in the house.

Not Rock Hall-studded, but still star-studded, is the band Chickenfoot, which is comprised of Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, both ex of Van Halen, guitar whiz (and Coldplay antagonist) Joe Satriani, and Red Hot Chili Pepper drummer Chad Smith. With a name like Chickenfoot, it's gotta be good?

Even more rock: The three non-Chris Cornell members of Soundgarden reunited on Tuesday night for a brief set that included TAD vocalist Tad Doyle on vox and, briefly, Tom Morello on guitar. The catalyst for all of this was Tom Morello's Justice tour, which stopped in at Seattle's Crocodile Cafe. It was the first performance by the Soundgarden members since their split in 1997. Video below, and a lot more at Ear  Candy Beat.

Farm

Ain't that some awesome artwork up there? That would be the cover of the upcoming Dinosaur, Jr album Farm, which is out 6/23 on Jagjaguwar.

Bruce Springsteen is finally gearing up to begin the Working On A Dream tour. Max Weinberg, of course, os starting to feel the pinch from NBC, who want him around for Conan's arrival in LA. So the E Street Band will need a replacement drummer for a few gigs. Preferably one from New Jersey. Someone who knows the songs. Someone who... is the drummer of the current drummer. That's right, Max's eighteen year-old son Jay will be the temp that fills in when Max is busy being a Burbank second banana.

Remember Marilyn Manson? He's back. Or rather, he will be on Friday, when new tune "We're From America" will be offered as a free download on his site. The new album is called The High End Of Low, features the return of Twiggy Ramirez, and is out May 26th.

Scared of emo kids? Scared of yourself because you're emo? You should be. A study in the UK has declared 'emo' to be the fourth most worrying word every parent should fear, behind 'hate,' depressed' and 'willy' (remember, this is a UK study) (IE, who knows what willy means, and why we should be worried about it. Come to think of it, it IS kind of scary)

Titles Of Posts Regarding The Shins Will Never Stop Saying They Will Or Won't Change Your Life

Posted on March 24, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Shinswood

"It'll change your life." And with those four words, the Shins went from being not huge, well-thought-of quietish indie band to huge, well-thought-of indie band contantly in danger of attaining Annoying Status thanks to the ubiquity of Braff Rock (term copyright Stereogum). Well, the Shins are back, and while the debate over the worth of their live performances rages on, word arrives that the band may essentially self release their upcoming album, partnering with an existing label for "mere" distribution purposes. This business model will change your life.

Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance would like to buy a car. Specifically, a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am. So he says on Twitter and the MCR site. Help him, won't you?

Here's an update if you're following the revolving lineups of Guns n' Roses. Robin Finck left GNR in order to return to Nine Inch Nails. So he's gone. (Never mind that NiN are apparently now on hiatus, but anyway.). Now, Axl, naturally, needs another guitarist to replenish his arsenal of three onstage six-stringers. And the 'winner' is... DJ Ashba, a player who has worked with Sixx:AM and Motley Crue in the past. Axl says he's been following him a long time. And speaking of GNR matters, original drummer Steven Adler says 'F*ck you' to Axl. That's nice.

Billy Corgan Now Only Rat In Cage

Posted on March 23, 2009 at 11:20 AM

Bc

Billy Corgan is now the sole remaining original Smashing Pumpkin after drummer Jimmy Chamberlain's departure. According to the press release (via Stereogum), "The SMASHING PUMPKINS' guitarist, singer, songwriter and founding member Billy Corgan has announced that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has left the group. Chamberlin joined the band Corgan founded in Chicago in 1988 and played on all their albums except Adore (1998). Corgan will continue to write and record as SMASHING PUMPKINS with plans to head into the studio this spring." It's all about the moniker. Why doesn't Billy release his books of poetry under the Smashing Pumpkins b(r)and name? Could be something not unlike Uninhabitable Mansions. But not as cool.

Rock-hall-bug In case you didn't hear, Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame inductees Metallica played a blistering ninety minute set at SXSW in Austin on Friday night. Yes, Guitar Hero was involved. Yes, it was impossible to get into. Yes, it ruled. Rolling Stone has a review.

Even great bands have sh*tty shows. And at SXSW, unless you're Metallica, it's easy to do - shared stages, rushed sets, gear and cables everywhere... it ain't easy. But as Peter Moren of Peter, Bjorn and John, who played a trainwreck of a show over the weekend said, it's these shows that keep you from becoming big-headed.

Friday Video Quickness: Vampire Weekend

Posted on March 20, 2009 at 09:33 AM

Vampire Weekend are a hot young band; were you aware of that. And so they appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to lend the fledgling show some 'cred' (and vice versa?). They performed a new song, White Sky, with a string section. And their dress code? Still a subject of interest, controversy:

New Beatles, No Biggie Or Anything

Posted on March 19, 2009 at 09:50 AM

The_beatles2

The Beatles, as is famously known, have yet to dip their toe into the digital 'space' (space being the hideous word that media/tech types like to use), which is why the September release of The Beatles: Rock Band is getting so much attention. Now, even more reason to get excited: Dhani Harrison, Geirge's son, says the game will include never-before-heard stuff. Using brand new Beatles stuff is not a bad way to sell your product. FYI.

It's on: the Music portion of the March Media Madness that is SXSW has begun. Everyone has a guide. Including Pitchfork.

Veckatimest, the Grizzly Bear album coming in May, is going to be huge. Do some pre-hugeness streaming of new track Cheerleader. And here for Southern Point.

They Are The Resurrection

Posted on March 18, 2009 at 11:21 AM

Stoneroses

Reunions come and go, but few are truly exciting. And these days, they're so common as to induce yawns, as opposed to exclamations of shock. But the Stone Roses getting back together? That's something. The paint-splattered, northern England masters of melodic psychedelia MAY be back soon, according to a report in the not-always-trustworthy Mirror tabloid in the UK. The quartet lost a member, and then another, during their slow deterioration in the mid-90s. By the time a struggling lineup, featuring only two of the original members, played a shockingly awful performance at the 1996 Reading Festival, fans, and the band, were ready for the Roses to hang it up. But if the feud between vocalist Ian Brown and guitarist John Squire really can be mended (money surely has something to do with it), then the world may be in for the reformation of one of the great bands of the last twenty years. And maybe the US, which has only ever seen eleven Stone Roses concerts, will get to see it firsthand.

That stunningly successful Michael Jackson series of concerts on sale in London may be coming to the US.

Trent Reznor is never scared to say what's on his mind. So the fact that ticketing companies can sell tickets originally, and then also handle the resell market? That's bullshit, according to Trent.

Don't show up to Britney Spears' show on March 23rd at Madison Square Garden expecting Madonna to appear. Because it won't happen. Unless it does.

Madonna adopted a baby from Malawi once, so why not do it again?

Public Enemy recently played Fallon. They brought the noise, and it ruled. Peep:

Too Fast For Love, But Not Too Fast To Tour

Posted on March 17, 2009 at 09:30 AM

Cfest

Motley Crue, man - you can't deny it. They rock, and they know it, and you know it. Carrie Underwood, who recently covered the Crue's Theatre Of Pain classic Home Sweet Home, knows it. So let's just all agree on that and focus on Cruefest 2, Motley Crue's newest traveling heavyfest, set to launch on July 19. So you've got the Crue, of course, but show up early for Godsmack, Drowning Pool, Theory Of A Dead Man, and Charm City Devils.

Sounds pretty awesome, right? It is, which is why we were so excited for Vince, Mick, Nikki and Tommy (and some hot chicks) to announce the tour at a very own Fuse Studios in New York. They did it up for us, so we're doing it up for them. Head here to our central spot for all things Cruefest 2, and Crue: pics, dates, tickets, video, polls, comments, etc, etc, etc, blah blah blah, Girls, Girls, Girls.

It was meant to be, and now, it will be, again (because they did this last summer): Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd are hitting the road again this summer. Sweet Home Alabama/All Summer Long mashup, live-style, ahoy.

Paul's Boutique, the classic Beastie Boys album that was reissued this year to celebrate its 20th anniversary, will soon have some sibling love: Check Your Head is set to receive the re-release treatment March 30 (digitally) and April 7 (expanded CD and vinyl).

Yes, that is the amazing artwork for the new Bob Dylan album. It's called Together Through Life, and it's out on April 27th.

The Trent Reznor/Chris Cornell Twitter battle continues! If you'll recall, Reznor slammed Chris Cornell's new Timbaland-produced full-length: "You know that feeling you get when somebody embarrasses themselves so badly YOU feel uncomfortable? Heard Chris Cornell's record? Jesus. " Yikes. Cornell has responded: ”What do you think Jesus would twitter? "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" or "Has anyone seen Judas? He was here a minute ago". Listen to Cornell's new jam below and judge just how awful it is for yourself.

The Breeders cover Marley on a new EP, Fate To Fatal, out 4/21.

All those Michael Jackson shows in the U.K. - all 50 - have sold out. But what if Jacko gets Wacko and bails? Promoter AEG will need insurance. They don't have that yet. Could be a lot of lost pounds if MJ doesn't pull through on these shows. He'll last all fifty though, right? Right?
