If You Seek No Doubt

Posted on February 27, 2009 at 09:30 AM

Bsamy

Hey everyone, No Doubt are back! How do we know they're back? They're performing on Gossip Girl. It's the O.C., or 90210's Peach Pit, 2009-style! Tune in, or not, or DVR, or whatever, on May 11.

You know it's getting serious in the Britney Spears trial when the hairdresser takes the stand! What's the trial about? Basically about extending restraining orders against former manager Sam Lufti and also ex-bf Adnan Ghalib. But the trial seems so much bigger than that. It's complicated. And yes, that's the artwork of the controversial If You Seek Amy single above. Hey chief, let's say that title out loud quickly, why not?

Rock-hall-bugWe are getting closer to the Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame, taking place on April 4 and broadcasting on Fuse. Get ready with It's Tricky by inductees Run-DMC.

Kids and Politicians

Posted on February 26, 2009 at 10:59 AM

Dude, there's a beef brewing between Brooklyn knob-twiddlers MGMT and the freaking ruling party in France. The duo's French lawyers are demanding compensation from President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP Party for use of the MGMT track Kids in online adverts. The party has offered a symbolic gesture of one Euro. The MGMT people are all whatever. Stay tuned! Or not.

Wilco's still-untitled album is due to be released in June. Dates are scheduled in the US and Europe, after which the band will return to the states for a date with Bonnaroo, the 10,000 Lakes Festival and the New Releases section of your local brick and mortar or online store. FYI their Ashes Of American Flags DVD is out April 18th.

R.I.P. Randall Bewley, guitarist for critically acclaimed avant guitar band Pylon. Bewley, who suffered a heart attack three days ago, was 53. Pylon emerged from the same turn of the 1980's Athens, GA scene that spawned R.E.M. and the B-52's. Pylon had recently reunited, playing highly regarded shows over the past several years.

Rock-hall-bugWe're about five weeks away from the Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremonies in Cleveland. Metallica, of course, will be inducted. It's been over twenty years - twenty! - since Master Of Puppets. Let's watch. Obey your Master:

From Out Of Nowhere

Posted on February 25, 2009 at 11:00 AM

Fnm

Faith No More, the Mike Patton-led band of unique and hip prog-metalers, will be reuniting for a series of shows in Europe. The tour will be their first since their somewhat acrimonious split in 1998. Patton has gone on to work with with musicians like John Zorn, in addition to keeping up his own projects like Tomahawk, and starting avant label Ipecac. FNM may be best known for Epic, but damn if this song ain't them at their most badass:

That Red Hot Chili Peppers hiatus? Looks like it'll be a very long hiatus. But don't cry for Anthony Kiedis: his life story is going to be an HBO show. Drummer Chad Smith on the other hand will be up to... hmmm... well, something, surely.

Not everyone is against the proposed Ticketmaster/Live Nation merger like Bruce Springsteen is: Seal, Shakira, Eddie Van Halen and Wofgang Van Halen (is he old enough to have a legally binding opinion?) are in favor of it. Seal has no financial stake in either company, but Shakira, who is signed to a lucrative Live Nation deal, certainly has.

They Feel For You. They Think They Love You.

Tinted_windows-press09

The other day we told you about Tinted Windows, the brand new all-star group consisting of members of Fountains Of Wayne, Cheap Trick, Smashing Pumpkins and Hanson. Now, via Stereogum, we have our first aural and video taste. How does it sound? Exactly what might you expect: the glossiest parts of Fountains Of Wayne, some glam guitars, rock solid drumming, and the guy from Hanson singing. Decent production then, but the melodies are crucial to a power pop album's success. And the melodies here bring a shrug to the shoulders instead of a blissed-out smile to the face. It's only a snippet each from two songs, but the tunes aren't as impressive as one might have imagined. More Traffic & Weather than Welcome Interstate Managers. Fans and old suits with ponytails will have a chance to hear more and judge for themselves at the band's live debut in Austin next month at Billboard's SXSW showcase.

Little Steven Van Zandt, of the E Street Band and The Sopranos, gives a fascinating mini-interview to Rolling Stone regarding Max Weinberg and his sticky situation: his boss, Conan O'Brien, starts the Tonight Show June 2nd. Max should be there. Except that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are due to begin the European leg of their tour that week. Yikes. NBC has been patient with Max for years, but can they really turn a blind eye to his absence during the debut week of the Tonight Show? Fuseblog prediction: Max is in LA for the first night of the Tonight Show, then races to Europe. Bruce play a few shows without Max. Not a bad problem for Max to have.

Speaking of Bruce, Ticketmaster has settled with the state of New Jersey and is offering refunds, chances to buy tickets, and everything but the kitchen sink to pissed off fans. Recall that Ticketmaster were directing fans who were shut out of tickets over to Tickets Now, their more expensive resale site. Ticketmaster must now keep their distance from Tickets Now. Also, 1000 of the 2000 fans who were screwed over by the site's buggy interface will be offered the chance to buy seats. The 1000 who lose out will have the chance to buy tickets to future Boss shows.

Oscar parties run the gamut from A-list to D-list but almost all are closed to the public. Not Prince's, whose throwdown at the Avalon Ballroom was open to anyone who was willing to wait hours for the opportunity to spend $100 to get in. The setlist, unsurprisingly, was stellar: Prince-penned classics like Controversy, I Feel For You, Cream, and Jungle Love, along with a healthy offering of covers (The Cars - Let's Go, Rolling Stones - Miss You, Jimmy Eat World (?!) - The Middle).

We're Going To Be Friends

Posted on February 23, 2009 at 10:17 AM

Bobn

The most anticipated reunion in indie rock finally came to fruition on Saturday night. Kinda. Former Pavement member Bob Nostanovich got married in Nashville this weekend, so of course there was a party. And a jam. And Steve Malkmus, Steve West, Mark Ibold and Bobby N. all got onstage to perform a few covers, including Love Train by the O'Jay's (no Pavement tunes). The packed house was too much for Silver Jew David Berman, who left in a huff. Pavement was apparently offered a spot at this year's Coachella, but turned it down. The money wasn't enough. Guess we won't see a full-scale reunion until this recession turns around. Stupid recession!

Who wouldn't want this calendar featuring Portland, Oregon's sexiest indie rock dudes?

Bruce Springsteen is the first announced headliner for this June's Glastonbury Festival in England; he'll be headlining Saturday night of the three day fest. You can also catch Bruce the next day at Hyde Park in London.

The White Stripes performed We're Going To Be Friends on the final Late Night With Conan O'Brien, which aired on Friday. The endearingly sloppy performance was their first since Meg White's breakdown brought the Icky Thump tour to a premature close.

Overkill

Posted on February 20, 2009 at 11:35 AM

U2

Is there anything more sad than rock star sad stories? J.D. Fortune, the Canadian who, via a reality show, became the frontman for Aussie 80s and 90s stars INXS, is now jobless, and homeless. Other disturbing details: he was dismissed with a polite Goodbye and Thank You at the Hong Kong airport, and he did loads of cocaine to block out the fact that the tour may be his last with the band. You know, their last singer had a bit of a coke problem; maybe Fortune should have thought twice.

If you would like to stream U2's No Line On The Horizon, go to their MySpace and do so.

Met At Work was a fantastic 80s band. Their frontman, Colin Hay, continues to release critically acclaimed albums. Too bad Ron Strykert, former Men At Work guitarist, wants to kill him.

Tinted Windows

Posted on February 19, 2009 at 09:24 AM

Ct

Supergroups are nothing new. The Traveling Wilburys were probably the most star-studded supergroup in the rock era. The Raconteurs are a more recent one. But has there ever been a more bizarre collection than Tinted Windows? This brand new band is comprised of (get ready...) James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins, Adam Schlesinger from Fountains Of Wayne (and Ivy!), Taylor freaking Hanson of Hanson and, on drums, Bun E. Carlos. Of Cheap Trick. I repeat: BUN E. CARLOS OF CHEAP TRICK. Holy smoke. They've completed an album. They'll be at SXSW in Austin next month.

Scott Weiland, formerly of Stone Temple Pilots, formerly of Velvet Revolver, solo artist, and once again of Stone Temple Pilots, is dipping his weathered skin into the fashion biz, designing a line of "classic rock n' roll" button-down shirts, striped flat front slacks, woven jackets, scarves and other such items. Prices range from $40 to $120, so even the singer from Talk Show can afford it.

The new Late Night With Jimmy Fallon premieres on March 2, so you can imagine that preparations are coming down to the wire. This is especially true of in-house band The Roots, as we learn from Rolling Stone. Two interesting tidbits: they'll commute each day from Philadelphia via a tourbus that departs at 9am, and, since NBC will no lunger pay for music publishing, the Roots are writing up to two hundred new pieces of music to use as beds and bumpers you hear going in and coming out of commercials. They've got about 55 pieces of music so far.

So, Did Montreal's Stars Call Ben Folds An A**hole?

Posted on February 18, 2009 at 09:46 AM

Stars

Sometimes rock stars just like to get bitchy. Witness yesterday's hubbub regarding the (real? fake?) tirade against Ben Folds that Stars frontman Torq Campbell went on. To summarize: a blog post on the Stars MySpace page from Campbell, leader of Canadian dream-poppers (and Broken Social Scene associates) Stars, appeared yesterday. In the post, Torq railed against Ben Folds, specifically regarding a CBC interview in which Folds describes the current album by Broken Social Scene/Do Make Say Think's Charles Spearin as "bad spa music." Campbell went on to call Folds, among other names, an a**hole. Later, that blog post was deleted, and a new post appeared, in which Campbell claims that the previous post was NOT by him, and that someone hacked into their MySpace and wrote it. Again, Torq Campbell claims that someone went through the trouble to somehow get into the Stars MySpace, and write a fake tirade, in Campbell's very recognizable "voice," against Ben Folds. Suuuuuure, Torq. Also, this is more publicity that Spearin's (excellent) album, The Happiness Project, could have hoped for. Well done, all!

Kings of Leon are headed out on another arena tour, but the attraction is really their opening act: The Walkmen, who'll be joining the Followill brothers coast to coast.

Whoa, M.I.A.'s baby is cute.

Nine Inch Jane's?

Posted on February 17, 2009 at 08:47 AM

Nine-inch-nails-060627

Velvet Revolver thought it'd be easy finding a new lead singer to replace Scott Weiland; it wasn't. Hearing talented singer after talented singer was an embarrassment of riches, but the situation quickly became overwhelming. But the band is close to having a new permanent singer, y'alls, and they're just a few weeks from a decision (it's true - peep their site!). It's down to a couple of guys. A couple of smooth-chested guys.

Trent Reznor took the Nine Inch Nails board today to make several fairly huge announcements: NIN will be heading out on tour later this year with Jane's Addiction (who last night played another last minute LA club show). Also, this tour will be less scripted and more spontaneous than last year's impressive Lights In The Sky tour. Oh, and this tour may be their last.

Speaking of possible retirements, Morrissey says he can't see himself performing and recording past the age of 55. He's currently 49. Years Of Refusal is out today.

Suge Knight got in a fight in Scottsdale, Arizona early on Monday. He is now in the hospital. Two men were arrested. One is Akon's business manager. Man.

Congrats to M.I.A., who gave birth to a boy on Wednesday. According to her MySpace, mother and child have been making mixtapes:

MY BABY WAS BORN WEDNESDAY , HE IS HEALTHY , FINE , BEAUTIFUL AND THE MOST AMZING THING EVER ON THIS PLANET, OF COURSE IM HIS MUM!!! ME AND BABY ARE PUTTING OUR TOUR DATES FOR 2010 TOGETHER AND MAKING MIX TAPES AND FIGURING OUT A WAY TO BREAK OUT OF THE HOSPITAL !

What do you use when you're trying to get off of drugs? Drug replacements. And what happens when you run out drug replacements? You go to the hospital. That's what Amy Winehouse, vacationing in St. Lucia in the Caribbean, did.

Grizzly Bear have revealed the artwork and tracklist for their upcoming Veckatimest, out in May via Warp. Artwork above, tracklist here.

It's Blitz! And The Eternal!

Posted on February 13, 2009 at 09:51 AM

Album cover time, and today, a new cover each from two NYC indie noise bands, Sonic Youth and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. First, the awesome YYYs art, via P'Fork:

Yyy

Isn't that neat? And also impossible - aren't you not supposed to be able to squeeze an egg like that? A somewhat mesmerizing photo for a photo-obsessed band.

Moving on to downtown royalty Sonic Youth. Their sixteenth (or so) album will be out in June on Matador. The artwork was revealed yesterday. Peep:

Sy

Other news: U2 will celebrate/promote/overstay-their-welcome-regarding their new album with a week's residency on Late Show With David Letterman. The band will perform each night from March 2 through March 6. That's a lot of chances for Bono to preach at us, America!

Ozzy Osbourne will not be holding his usually annual Ozzfest tour or one-off this summer. The reason? He's dying to make a new album. That's the official reason. Did you know the economy sucks? Ozzy didn't say that, but he doesn't have to. And hearing Ozzy say that might be odd.

"No I don't know the reason why I'll love you till the day I die." Happy Valentine's Day. Why not listen to this song?

Doll Parts

Posted on February 12, 2009 at 10:59 AM

Aamm

This time o' year, love is in the air. For example, did you know that Mickey Rourke and Courtney Love are possibly maybe dating? The UK's down and dirty Mirror says that the Wrestler and the Crazy have been together for three weeks now, which is why Love got her doll parts in a bunch when Rourke took to flirting with the Mirror's very own gossip columnists while Courtney looked on. Via NY Mag's Vulture.

Cutest girl in the world Mandy Moore is now engaged to East Village-drinkin' troubadour Ryan Adams. So E! News has confirmed. Moore has dated a bunch of famous dudes, including Wilmer Valderrama, Andy Roddick, and Zach Braff (who didn't change her life). Ryan Adams has previously dated Parker Posey and Noel Gallagher (unconfirmed). Via BrooklynVegan.

As you may or may not have heard, Joaquin Phoenix was the guest on Letterman last night. He was bearded. And wearing sunglasses. And chewing gum. And possibly acting. Or possibly not acting. Look:
