Keeping it Real. Punk.

Are you unhappy with the state of today's young punk rockers?  Are they too pretty?  Too rich?  Too young?  Do you feel like they've forgotten what it means to be punk?   Do you worry that they never really knew?

Are you a young punk rocker?  Are you confused because girls like your pierced face and pointy hair?  Do people call you a singer when you've never sung a note in your life (despite being your band's lead... singer)?  Are you finding it hard to maintain a respectable punk rock identity in a world that increasingly wants to use you to sell sodas and cars?

Relax.  Take a deep breath.  Then watch 80 year-old Zak and Team Spider as they remind you what it means to be punk rock.

Watch an old man rock harder than you.

Team Spider Myspace page! (Listen to Bush Bush Bush, you owe it to yourself.)

Bush, Bush, Bush.
Dumb, dumb, dumb.
Bomb, bomb, bomb.
The Constitution.

This Saturday (tomorrow), on Water Street in D.U.M.B.O. there will be a Guinness and oyster music festival.  I like how the postcard for the event describes the variety of music they will have, "a burnin jambalaya of bluegrass, country, folk, & rock."  I'll be there with my camera tomorrow and hope to get some great shots of beer and oysters.  So come out y'all for this grea event.

For more info please check the website http://www.waterstreetrestaurant.com.

Stealing Home

"Congrats this week on the release of your new CD Coming Home -- what an awesome title! Sounds familiar though, where did we hear that before? Oh yeah, it's the name of our new CD..."  From "An Open Letter to Nicole's Dad," at Spin.com

How dare he!  How dare that Lionel Richie attempt to infringe upon the creative genius of one of todays greatest young musical talents!  Did he think he wouldn't get caught?  Did he think no one would see what he was up to?  Who does he think he is?

When you think of great bands, one name leaps immediately to mind - New Found Glory.  These guys have broken musical boundaries with their unusual combination of "punk" and "pop," and went all the way to #85 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with their single, "My Friends Over You!"  Compare that to Lionel Richie, who barely had five #1 US singles and almost didn't win two Grammy Awards and an Oscar!  With the release of New Found Glory's newest album, Coming Home, the world was prepared to witness a new stage in the evolution of rock 'n roll - until someone came along and ruined the vibe.  Little Lionel Richie had to come along and STEAL the album title right out from under them!  By calling his own album "Coming Home" AND releasing it in the same month, he caused mass panic and confusion as people had NO IDEA which album was which!  But his insidiousness didn't stop there.

With almost no investigation, I was able to unearth some startling information.  In a matter of minutes I found that Lionel Richie had stolen the title, Coming Home not only from New Found Glory, but also from dozens of other musical artists from across every musical genre!  In just the first seventy-two (of one-hundred and ninety-four!!!) matches on Amazon.com, I found twenty-nine exact title matches!  That's not even counting Mama, I'm Coming Home, by Ozzy Osbourne or I'm Coming Home by Johnny Mathis (whoever that is!).  So Mr. Richie not only stole from New Found Glory, he also stole from Andy Hopping, Billy Burnette,  Amedeo, Tim Janis, Shenandoah, the American Frontier Culture, Calvin Jones, Esquire, Brian Gallagher, James & James, Graham Breedlove, Paul Elliott, Alex Lloyd, Chuck Cheesman, Hermosa, Brooke, Matt Heinecke, Darren Crossey, Sonny Sonnenstein, Debbie Fier, John Martinborough, Connie Schroeder, Peter Blum, Mysty, and Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers - among many, many others!

How could the music industry let this happen?  How can those in charge allow this plagiary to continue?  No one - no matter how talented, handsome and/or legendary - should be able to get away with this kind of sneaky, underhanded attention-grabbing.  Obviously Lionel Richie named his album Coming Home just to make New Found Glory mad.  In their anger, he knew they would write an "open letter" to him.  And he clearly wanted them to then give it to the press to distribute far and wide.  Every time someone writes about it, they're just giving Lionel Richie more publicity!  Can't you see we're all playing right into his scheming hands!

In closing, Lionel Richie tricked and took advantage of these poor, young rockers, and I think he should pay.

Also, newfound is one word.  Not two.  http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/newfound
