Will Smith Urges Gangsta Rappers to Be Role Models

Maybe before calling out gangsta rappers, the Fresh Prince should tone down HIS act. Pot kettle black, etc.

Would You Trust These Men With Your Third World Poverty Awareness Issues?

Posted on June 22, 2005 at 11:42 AM

Motley_crue_062205web

Remember when Motley Crue tried to get on the Live 8 bill but was turned down?
The band was sad that they were not able to help generate awareness for the third world's poverty issues. Remember that? Well, there's good news and there's bad news. First the good news: they've been added! The bad news? It's the Toronto bill of Live 8. Who else is on the bill? The usual mainstream Can-rock suspects, The Tragically Hip, Bryan Adams, et al, and none of what makes the current canuck scene so great: Broken Social Scene, Stars, By Divine Right, Raising the Fawn, etc. Oh, and will someone please let Vince, Mick, Nikki and Tommy know that the show is not in Toronto but rather in Barrie, an hour north of the city. O Canada, etc.

Actually, Deep Purple is also on the Canada bill, which is kind of cool.

Spin Magazine's Ten Best Albums Of The Past Twenty Years

Posted on June 21, 2005 at 11:27 AM

Pavement2web

The BBC, and everyone else it seems, has reported on Spin's Top Ten Albums of the past twenty years. Here's the list.

1 Radiohead - OK Computer
2 Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back
3 Nirvana - Nevermind
4 Pavement - Slanted And Enchanted
5 The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
6 Pixies - Surfer Rosa
7 De La Soul - 3 Feet High And Rising
8 Prince - Sign O' The Times
9 PJ Harvey - Rid Of Me
10 NWA - Straight Outta Compton

I love all of these albums, but I must say I am surprised PJ Harvey made it that high. I mean, where is Teenage Fanclub's Bandwagonesque? Alien Lanes by Guided By Voices? Sadly, no Sting albums in that list. Any thoughts on the list, or perhaps yourself, Sting?

"I get solace from the fact that whoever Sting is, he seems to be sending out mixed signals. There seems to be a great disparity between the extremes people see in me. On the one hand, I'm a rainforest-tree-hugging savior. On the other, I'm this sort of lowlife. I like to think that I'm able to encompass both ends of the scale."

Sting Makes Himself, And The World, Cry

Posted on June 7, 2005 at 10:56 AM

Today's Sting Quote Of The Day:

“My songs are written to move people, and the greatest compliment anyone can pay one of my songs is that it made them cry. And I've done that for myself on a number of occasions. It's lovely feeling; it's good to cry, it does you a world of good.”

Today's Sting Quote Of The Day

Posted on June 6, 2005 at 12:33 PM

"I walked up to the source of the Ganges in the high Himalayas, and I didn’t have any music with me. But the rhythm of walking and the sound of waterfalls and the wind and rain - all of that creates music in your head, so in that sense I’m never without music."

The Most Insufferable Band Of The Decade, According To The Most Insufferable Paper Of Record

Posted on June 6, 2005 at 11:11 AM

Coldplayweb_1

ris·i·ble   Audio pronunciation of "risible" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (rz-bl)
adj.

   1. Relating to laughter or used in eliciting laughter.
   2. Eliciting laughter; ludicrous.
   3. Capable of laughing or inclined to laugh.

"There's nothing wrong with self-pity. As a spur to songwriting, it's right up there with lust, anger and greed, and probably better than the remaining deadly sins. There's nothing wrong, either, with striving for musical grandeur, using every bit of skill and studio illusion to create a sound large enough to get lost in. Male sensitivity, a quality that's under siege in a pop culture full of unrepentant bullying and machismo, shouldn't be dismissed out of hand, no matter how risible it can be in practice. And building a sound on the lessons of past bands is virtually unavoidable. But put them all together and they add up to Coldplay, the most insufferable band of the decade."

The Official Sting Website

Posted on June 3, 2005 at 11:34 AM

I recently discovered sting.com, the official website of Sting, the official artist of tax brackets most of us can only dream of. It's got it all, news, pics, even discounts on all Sacred Love Tour apparel! My favorite part? The quote of the day. Dash it if Gord doesn't just hit the nail on the head with this keenest of observs:

“When I’m in a melancholic mood or I need a mental boost, I tend to play classical music, like Bach partitas. I have to play it rather than listen to it. When you play, you have a different relationship with the composer, it’s almost like having a conversation with him through the instrument. My classical playing isn’t very good but it’s interesting, and I do get solace, satisfaction and mental peace from playing it.”

A Bach partita partyta! I shall try that the next time i find my Mercury Rising.

Bright Eyes is 'HELLA SMEXY': America Debates

The Bright Eyes talk continues on the Oven Fresh boards. Nina (as well as Your momma from your momma's house, who sounds suspiciously like Nina), thinks Conor pwns [sic], though she probably meant to hit the 'o' key and not the 'p'. Liz from Dallas seems a bit more grounded.
