Posted on November 22, 2004 at 03:59 PM

VinesAssault charges against Vines lead singer Craig Nicholls were dropped Saturday after his lawyers revealed he is suffering from Asperger's syndrome.

Asperger's syndrome is an autism-related condition characterized by social and communication deficiencies.

Nicholls was charged with assault after allegedly kicking a press photographer and damaging their camera during concerts in Sydney six months ago.

I'd like to comment that I have Asperger's Syndrome and I do *not* assault people or trash things. In fact, I know a lot of people with AS who do not do these things. AS is not an excuse for illegal behavior.

I also have Asperger's, and it does NOT make me kick people. Was he provoked in a manner that an Aspie would see as provocation and an NT wouldn't?

Asperger's Syndrome is not an illness. It is part of who a person is. It is disabling, for sure. But I am getting sick of reading sensasionalist articles that talk about people "suffering" from A.S. When will people learn to show a bit of respect with their use of language?

Im still not sure what Asperger's Syndrome is... could someone please tell me the whole thing on what it actually is?

Aspergers syndrome does not make a person more likely to be aggressive. I should know, as I also have AS. For this reason, I can't understand why Aspergers is so frequently being used in court cases to excuse bad behaviour. It brings down the reputation of all people with AS, the majority of which spend their lives as law-abiding citizens.

Asperger's is a neurological difference. Aspies do not have social skills come to them in the intuitive manner of NTs, although most are capable of learning them. Nonverbal communication is especially difficult to master. So he could have been provoked in a manner that an NT would realize was a joke. Some have poor impulse control. They are often good at focusing on particular topics that interest them.
Also, most aspies have sensory differences. Sometimes this can be a good thing, but often it is crippling. Nicholls may be unable to deal with flashes, or be particularly sensitive to light. Myself, I am very sensitive to light, which means that I have excellent night vision but often find bright light painful.

This guy is fullblown asshole, not just autistic. His refusal to be even partially decent is NOT from being autistic at all, it's a personal decision to be obnoxious. I'm sick of these articles making autism seem like schizoids, mass murderers, or your average rageaholic!!! GET THE FACTS FCKING RIGHT, DUMBSHTS!
