So by now just about everyone has heard that Britney Spears is going to marry that Backstreet-Boys-reject-looking guy.
Hmmm, big singing star marries cheesy backup dancer...sound familiar?
No word yet on when Kevin "Backstreet" Federline will be changing his name to Chris Judd.

Eminem's ex-wife will be spending the next four months in jail for leaving a court-ordered drug treatment program without permission. Guess ducking out for a quick blow just isn't allowed anymore. Strict bastards.
Eminem responded to the news by immediately writing 10 new songs about how much she sucks.

Gloria Estefan to tour no more...Miracles DO happen.
Battle over Hendrix...Family feud over almighty dollar.
Merle Haggard performs for aliens...Willie too! It's a little known fact that aliens prefer "old" country over "new" country.

And the award for "Best excuse ever for a DUI arrest" goes to the Rhinestone Cowboy himself, Glen Campbell!
Campbell on one of those cheesy Hollywood gossip shows last night speaking about his November 2003 DUI bust:
"I wasn't drunk, I was just overserved."
Judging by his mug shot, I'd say he was a bit of both.

If Senator Orrin Hatch and other Republicans (and probably some Democrats as well) get their way, that shiny, new iPod you're carrying around in your pocket may become illegal.
An iPod illegal? How could that happen? Well, Senator Orrin Hatch is sponsoring legislation called the INDUCE ACT which he is trying to push through Congress this week without debate on the issue. The bill allows the record industry to file lawsuits against companies that make unrestricted music software OR hardware.
What does it mean? It means the labels can sue not only owners of file-sharing applications such as Kazaa, but also manufacturers who make devices that can play unauthorized music, such as the iPod.
What can you do to stop this? Call your Congressman, of course, or simply go to this site to fill out a form that will be faxed directly to your Congressman.

A modernized production of Mozart's "The Abduction from the Seraglio" in Berlin is catching a ton of flack for its frank portrayal of prostitutes, full-frontal nudity, drugs and sadistic violence.
That's one way to introduce a new generation to the classics...fill it with all the sex, drugs and violence that they're used to!
Crowds have been thick despite strong protetsts from some and a threat by sponsor DaimlerChrysler to pull its annual funding.
The original opera was set in an 18th century Turkish palace. For his updated interpretation, Spanish director Calixto Bieto moves the action to a brother full of forced prostitution, drug abuse and violence. Mozart would be proud.
My favorite quote from the new report...
"When the prostitutes were massacred onstage, I had to leave."
Sounds like as good a time as any.
American theater producers, hoping to capitalize on the controversy and success of the Berlin production, have announced plans to update the works of Shakespeare with a population of pimps and 'hos, automatic weaponry and the use of Ebonics rather than the flowery old English crap which no one can understand.

So what exactly is the cultural significance of Michael Moore's scathing indictment of the Bush administration, Farenheit 9/11 beating out the Wayans' brothers comedy, White Chicks, as the highest-grossing film over the weekend?
I'll leave that question to people smarter than myself, but just maybe it means that something a little weightier than black guys dressing up as white chicks can even have a cultural significance in the disposable culture of the blockbuster summer movie.
It's hard to analyze completely without seeing the film, which I tried to do all weekend here in NYC but every showing was sold out wherever I checked.
First, Hollywood jumps on the religious bandwagon after the success of The Passion of the Christ and now this. Looked for watered-down, non-offensive, pseudo-poltical documentaries coming to a theater/television/DVD player near you as soon as they can crank them out.

It's been a bad week for Perry Farrell.
First, the concert tour that he founded and organized, Lollapalooza, was canceled, and now his Jane's Addiction bandmates have left him high and dry to go form another group.
Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Chris Chaney have left Jane's to start a new band with Skycycle vocalist Steve Isaacs.
I smell a Porno For Pyros reunion in the works...

With Van Halen back on the road with Sammy this summer, the first question that comes to mind is, "Where the hell is Diamond Dave?"
The NY Daily News has tracked down the former frontman and found him living in a modest lower East Side apartment while training to be an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Roth hopes to earn his certification by November and work as a volunteer one weekend a month.
When I have my first heart attack, there's no one I'd rather have manning the paddles than David Lee Roth himself.

Rapper/actor DMX was arrested last night at NY's Kennedy Airport for allegedly attempting to steal a car, authorities said.
Suppposedly, Port Authority Police interrupted an argument between DMX, a friend of his that is also charged in the attempted auto theft and the man whose car they are accused of stealing. Officials said a preliminary investigation found that DMX may have presented himself as a federal agent.

What could be dorkier than a middle-aged man in a Superman suit?
A whole bunch of them.
See them in all their geeky glory here.
It turns out that every year in Metropolis, IL (Metropolis, Superman...get it?) a Superman Festival is held. Celebrity guests (Z-list?) show up, people parade through town and superhuman mayhem ensues.
As if anyone should be shocked, but people even dress their dog up as the Caped Crusader.
If you ever see me there, please blast me with Kryptonite immediately.

So what does it take to reunite Destiny's Child?
A billion dollars. Or at least the chance to win a billion dollars.
Word today that Destiny's Child will perform together for the first time in nearly two years on the Pepsi Play For a Billion TV game show this fall.
Damon Wayans hosts the show where someone has the chance to win a billion dollars. Chances of that happening must be slim, though, since producers are guaranteeing that one finalist will win $1 million even if the grand prize isn't awarded.
I'll bet a billion it won't be.

What do heavy metal drummers who don't have a gig do with their time? Become dance club DJs, of course.
At least that's the path Tommy Lee recently took when he signed on to be the DJ during a Father's Day event at the Bellagio's Light Nightclub.
Only problem was, he sucked.
Or at least that's the story that the club marketing director is sticking to. Sean Christie says Lee had to be forcibly removed from the club only 30-minutes into his DJ gig when he refused to make a graceful exit. Sounds like Lee was playing music that just wasn't motivation the crowd. Ordering bottle after bottle of $800 Cristal champagne and not paying for it might have had something to do with the dismissal as well.
Lee, of course, denies all of this, but stressed his availability for weddings and Bah Mitzvahs.

A NY concert promoter and Democratic activist has started on online petition to draft Bruce Springsteen to play a show at Giants Stadium during the Republican National Convention in a bid to oppose President Bush's re-election campaign.
The event is supposed to be held September 1, but plans are contingent on Bruce's participation. It doesn't sound like it's going to happen, based on comments from the Boss' spokesmen that say he won't be playing and should concentrate on music rather than politics.
It's a great idea, but when did Bruce Springsteen announce his bid for the Presidency? Maybe he should've, as it obviously seems like he'd be able to motivate people more than Kerry has. I'm not sure what is says about the Democratic Party or Kerry if the only thing that can pull out a victory against Bush is a concert by the Boss.
Since Lollapalooza has been cancelled and there are a bunch of artists with time on their hands, maybe we should turn the Democratic Convention into a three-day music fest with Perry Farrell as keynote speaker?

America's favorite (for the next 5 minutes, at least) dizzy blonde was forced to cancel Tuesday's show in Providence, RI because of a kidney infection.
Simpson was upset at the cancellation but happy to have yet another excuse not to have sex with her husband, Nick Lachey.

You know, when I think of Bob Dylan, the first thing that comes to mind is baseball.
Uh, ok, maybe not.
Which is why it's a little strange to read today that Bob Dylan's summer tour will be a tribute to the national pasttime, kicking off with a show in Cooperstown, NY (home of the Baseball Hall of Fame) on Aug. 6 and continuing on to minor league ballparks across the country. Dylan will be joined on tour by Willie Nelson, another name synonymous with baseball (not).
In other news, look for Peter, Paul and Mary at an arena football game near you or Simon and Garfunkel on the LPGA tour.

Wow. News today that this year's Lollapalooza music festival has been canceled due to poor ticket sales just three weeks before it was scheduled to begin. Organizer Marc Geiger was in "utter disbelief" while co-founder Perry Farrell said his "heart is broken."
So will the hearts of many fans (well, I guess not that many since no one was buying tickets) who were ready to see a great lineup that included Morissey, The Pixies, Wilco, Polyphonic Spree and P.J. Harvey.
But maybe it's this lineup full of 1980s comeback bands that doomed Lollpalooza. Maybe the audience for these bands is getting older and less likely to spend all day at a concert event, but more likely to see these bands individually. The younger audience (who buy more tickets and go to more shows) probably just doesn't connect with these bands if they even know who they are. They're much more likely to go see something like the Warped Tour with younger bands who get the lion's share of radio and video plays.

It's parody with a message...
If you live in a big city, you've probably seen the brightly colored, minimal silhouette iPod ads plastered around your city that mimic the players' recent TV ads. About a month or so ago in downtown NYC, someone had the bright idea to alter the ads to make a statement about the war in Iraq and they soon starting popping up all over the city.
As is so often the case, what started in NY has now made its way to L.A. as the iParody billboards have now been spotted all over the City of Angels as well.
The posters feature a variety of silhouetted images from the war (Iraqi prisoners, insurgents throwing grenades, shooting rocket launchers, etc.) under the heading, "iRaq" with the ominous tagline, "10,000 Iraquis killed, 773 U.S. soldiers died."

Jam band Phish were joined onstage by none other than Jay-Z (huh?) in their New York swan song performance at Brooklyn's Keystone Park over the weekend. S. Carter himself hopped up onstage to help the band get through "99 Problems' and "Big Pimpin.'"
I don't know about you, but when i think about pimpin', the first people that come to mind are Phish. Instead of pimpin' ho's and sporting bling, Phish pimps granola girls who don't like to shave and trade in hummus and falafel rather than gold and diamonds.
Yo baby, your underarms are KICKIN', and thats not just the nitrous oxide talkin'.

I'd be remiss today if I didn't pay tribute to the late, great Ray Charles, who was laid to rest today in Los Angeles today.
Just reading the list of attendess and speakers should give you an idea of the influence he had and how well-respected he was. B.B. King, Stevie Wonder and Wynton Marsalis performed musical tributes, while Willie Nelson performed a tearful rendition of his signature song, "Georgia On My Mind." Clint Eastwood read a glowing tribute.
Georgia was on my mind as I read this, thinking back to a lucky night years ago that I was able to see Ray Charles perform at the Chastain Amphitheater in Atlanta. I remember being blown away by his performance, wondering how someone his age could still be that vibrant, that good...and he was.

Officials at Atlanta's Fulton County Jail are catching a ton of heat today for not being aware that a rap video was being shot in their jail and for also allowing another inmate to escape while the video was being shot.
The video was being shot for jailed rapper Clifford Harris (stage name T-I). Officials had no idea the video was being shot, even though some guards allowed cameramen to basically roam around the jail while filming.
Officials deny any relation to the video shoot, but another inmate was able to escape during the filming. The escapee was found hours later a a local gas station.

There's a new Pixies song out (only on iTunes) and it rocks, so go get it.
Interestingly, it was written by Kim Deal, who really had only co-written two Pixies songs in the past with Frank Black (although she wrote plenty of songs in her later band, The Breeders).

Because of my deep religious beliefs, I will now be called, "Madonna" and I now refuse to acknlowledge anything about my past I no longer like.

Courtney Love joins Britney and Christina as the latest high-profile female to cancel their summer tour. While Spears' and Aguileras' reasons may have been physical, Love's is entirely legal. In the face of mounting legal woes (with charges coming at her almost weekly), Love will postpone all June and July dates.
So Britney, Christina and Courtney are hanging out all summer with nothing to do...maybe they'll get bored and form a supergroup! Britney and Christina can make out onstage while Courtney throws things at people and disappears backstage to do "whatever" for long periods of time?
Hey look...there's Francis Bean!
