May 5, 2008 - New Orleans

Dinner_3

This is when we eat dinner and this is usually how it is set up. This is catering. Jae is wrestling with some salad and Fitz helps himself to Jambalaya...when in Rome, or New Orleans, you eat Jambalaya and put hot sauce on everything...including salad.

Fitz_window

After dinner and before the show we like to explore the city we're playing in....IF theres time. Its too close to show time at the House of Blues New Orleans...so Fitz just looks out the window to the street below to see what he can see. Its N.O. so he sees a lot. John from Billy Talent met Robert Plant right outside. He was glowing!

Radio_show_3

WDUB in New Orleans had us come in and play some songs in the studio acoustically. We do this whenever we can, it's a lot of fun. They played some tracks from the record, we answered some questions, and performed "Boring" and "Please, Please"

Kc_jaebumper It's not all work on this tour. On a night off, everyone on this tour met up and played "whirleyball"! Here is Jae gearing up to ram Bob from MCR. This game was intensely fun. Kinda like wiffle ball in go carts!
Kc_allover

Here we are squeezed into our dressing room in KC. This is a good place to play. The staff is friendly, the people who came to the show we're all awesome, and we got to eat some pizza. It looks like Jae is sitting on Fitz's lap...he isn't really.
Kc_warm

Fitz and me amidst our daily ritual of warming up our vocal chords and loosening up our fingers. We sing through songs in the set and work on some new music.
Kc_semi
It has grown very crowded in our van with just dudes and suitcases so the MCR crew were nice enough to give our gear a ride in their truck. Every day we unload the truck and get our stuff out of their way.
Kc_crowd This place looks a mini Thunderdome. Someone who works here told me they used to hold Wrestlemania here back in the day. There is Fitz's dayglo pedal board and the crowd waiting patiently for the show to start.

Den_venue_2 What a great room this is. I had a hard time keeping my eyes off of these chandeliers while we played. They were lit up purple at some points and I kept imagining HUGE jelly fish floating above me....guess I need some sleep.....
Den_toddbath_2

Chris likes to catch us off guard when he is taking pics. Here I am and that is really the look on my face. There is the foot of our tour manager who is trying to get 13 minutes of sleep before the show.
Den_moveout_2 This is after the storm. Fitz gets ready to leave The Filmore in Denver for the night. Jae is behind him pilfering drinks from the dressing room. Fitz carries out his acoustic and the video camera we are using to document the tour.
Den_jaework_2
We spend a lot of time waiting around or sitting on our butts in our van or in our dressing room. To get the blood moving again, Jae does some crunches and some cals. It keeps him sane and makes him feel better about eating ice cream for breakfast.
Den_gash_2 Touring is risky business. Chris will tell you. Here he is nursing a gash he got on his head. While he was on tour...this isn't technically a show wound. He stood up and hit his head on a towel rack in our hotel room. I watched it happen....brutal.

As he has made perfectly clear, this is Fitz's rig. We have set up our gear and are getting ready to sound check for a few minutes. I like to walk around the stage for a minute to get my bearings and plant my feet. The stage crew and engineers put everything in place and get us ready to play a show.
Jae sets up his drum kit every day in front of the stage during the MCR sound check. He changes drum heads, tightens everything up, and does a general inspection of his world so he doesn't run into problems  during the set. That's the Billy Talent kit set up next to him. Those drums are played by a really nice person we cal... Aaron from BT.
This is what Jae spends a decent portion of his life doing these days. Here he is sleeping on the floor in the back of our van on the way to Denver, CO. Jae is an unwavering optimist and will always wake from this spot with a smile and a kind word. He will swear that he "likes" to sleep on the floor in the van. Jae is insane.
MCR and Billy Talent crew put a lot of work into making this show happen. And they start early. It takes all day to load in gear, hang lighting, set up the stage and barricades, and run cables. These dudes work 14 hours a day!
I change my guitar strings before every show. Where did they get this sofa??
This is before the show. I am running around the stage being nervous, triple checking everything I can put my hands on, and putting way to much gaff tape all over everything.  I am super paranoid about tripping on loose cables during the show, so I slather day-glo orange tape everywhere.
This is a place called The Great Salt Air Theater in Salt Lake City, UT. It was way out in the middle of nowhere sitting alone on the shore of the the Great salt lake. It was eerily cold and hauntingly beautiful. Chris snapped over 400 pictures on this day and they all came out looking like this. There was no shortage of breathtaking landscapes on this day. The shore is littered with the bodies of birds who've ingested saltwater and perished. Two words: CREEPY and BEAUTIFUL.
Fitz and I start playing songs together in our dressing room every day around 5:30. This gives us a chance to warm up and figure if anything in the set needs work. We will talk about what was uncomfortable or awkward the night before and work on it. This is homework time. It is also, when we stretch our limbs and eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I like to sing before the show. It helps calm me down. Otherwise, I'd just pace around and worry. It helps boosts my confidence.

Hey guys,

So the dead birds on the shore of the great Salt Lake are actually the bodies of birds that died last fall from Avian Cholera (close to 15,000 birds last year). Their bodies fell into the lake and the salt preserved them, which is why when they wash up on the shore now they look newly deceased (minus internal stuff -like a big fucking bird battlefield or a zombie movie). Apparently this happens every few years. In 1997 there were 30,000 birds that died).

Yeah, after walking out to the lake that day and wondering about all the dead bird bodies I looked it up online to find out why.

You guys were awesome in SLC and it was a pleasure to meet you all!

Have a wonderful rest of tour and hope to see you again soon!

Here is what the Crystal Ballroom in Portland looked like a couple hours before we played. When people jump around or dance in this place, the walls and floor bounce and shake. It feels like your in an earthquake and “Not ok” is the last song you’re hearing before you die. It’s very surreal and very fun. I kept staring at that chandelier while I played.
No, this is not Jae’s living room...The dudes from MCR like to play Halo on the big screen, so they drag this one around from city to city. Jae sits down and tries to keep up but he gets killed off pretty quick. As you can see, he is a good loser. He laughs about being horrible at Halo and this makes me smile. He brightens up everyone’s day by being a good sport.
It always makes me feel good to see posters and marquees with our name next to these 2 bands that we love. I think the only thing better then playing this tour every night, is being able to watch MCR and Billy Talent play their songs. No matter what I am doing, when I hear them start to play certain songs like “Cemetery Drive” or “Surrender”, I run to side stage to sing along.
Chris is huge into his headphones lately cause he just got his first ipod. What he is staring at is his laptop. He is also huge into photography and graphic design. He spends ALL of his free time taking pictures and then editing them. Once in a while he designs a shirt or poster for us. He is very good at this stuff.
Fitz starts warming up about 2 hours before we play. He and I usually do some vocal exercises, then we play part of the set acoustically, then we do exercises again. Also, this is the new evil cowboy shirt he bought down the street. It looks like a good shirt so we all talk about it for a while and decide he may keep it and play shows in it.
We have set up a mini DB headquarters office today so we can all set up laptops. See! That’s Chris’ laptop...he’s editing some of our photos. I am still trying to get the set list right for the night. Fitz is most likely watching Jae get killed playing some Halo. I seem to be looking that direction too, so maybe I’m watching people play Halo when I should be working.
We all sit down to answer messages from kids who have seen us play on this tour, answer emails, and take care of some business. That’s our printer, if we didn’t have that...I wouldn’t be able to print set lists and I would always forget what comes next.
This is always a really fun part of our day. This is after the show. We stand at the table where we sell our shirts and cds and meet all the kids we just played for. We get to talk to new people every day and give out stickers and posters. This IS why we do this. This IS what makes all the driving and waiting around all day worth it! This is why we will never stop touring...cause meeting people who love music and playing shows is what we live for.

I loved you guys when I saw you the first night in Portland! It was awesome! The Crystal Ballroom used to be for swing dancing wich is why the floor is so flexable. But I think it really adds to the feel of the show. Keep playing and rocking and know that some college student in Oregon has a poster, CD, and bumpersticker that shows her support. -Chello

I miss Drive By SOOOOOOOOO much. =[

I first heard them in Portland and was immediately blown away. I was going wild in the audience trying to find out who they were. The music was so loud that I thought I heard, "Pi Phi, Dry Dye, and Hi Five" HAHAHA

I'm so glad I bought their cd! AAAAH! I miss them so much!!!

i totally remember this part of the day when i met all of you. you talked to my mom too. it was really funny.

im so glad i bought your new cd it really inspires!! haha

I saw them for the first time on April 18th in Chicago!!! They were really awesome and i was amazed that they sounded EXACTLY the same live as they did on cd!!! BIlly Talent was wild... which was a bad experience because every time i listen to them i get the image of him screaming on an amp in my head... but they sound less chipmunky on cd. My Chemical Romance was good... but I was expecting a little more energy. But I shouldn't complain. I haven't been on tour for two or three months!!!
