Phish At Bonnaroo, June 14, 2009: Photos

Posted on June 17, 2009 at 07:37 PM

On Sunday night at Bonnaroo, Phish took to the What Stage for their second headlining set of the festival. While the band may—may—have seemed a bit tentative during parts of Friday's performance, they were confident and relaxed during Sunday's festival-closing show. And yes, Saturday headliner Bruce Springsteen was on hand for a mid-show guest appearance, resulting an a Bruce Springsteen and the Phish Street Band run through "Mustang Sally," "Bobby Jean" and "Glory Days." Snoop Dogg At Bonnaroo, June 14, 2009: Photos

Posted on June 16, 2009 at 11:28 AM

WE DA WEST: Snoop Dogg. Sunset. A special guest: Erykah Badu. Fifty thousand (or more) people. And the loudest sub-woofers at Bonnaroo.

"Is this the photo pit for Snoop Doggy Dogg?" "No, Snoop Dogg." "Oh, I'm in the wrong photo pit."

The Decemberists At Bonnaroo, June 13, 2009: Photos

Posted on June 15, 2009 at 01:53 PM

The Decemberists may have been overdressed, given the steamy conditions, but their cinematic style of lit-prog fits right in at Bonnaroo. The core band took to the stage with the help of two very special guests: Becky Stark (pictured second from top, and farther below) of Lavender Diamond, and Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, both of whom are currently in the touring Decemberists lineup, performing the parts they recorded on the most recent Decemberists album The Hazards Of Love. Bonnaroo: Taking a bite of the 'B' -- Saturday

Posted on June 14, 2009 at 06:26 PM

IMG_violins

OK, so I've seen all kinds of things here in Manchester, Tenn -- pretty things, bizarre things, scary things (well, scary if you count the main stage Port-A-Potties after dark) -- but nothing so ridiculously cute as these two rising stars of the Tennessee eco-folk scene. Notice the lead violinist's itty-bitty instrument. Awww!

I'll admit I'm getting hooked on Bonnaroo. Not just 'cuz the music has been fantastic, or the atmosphere so relaxed. It's the fact that Bonnaroo is less a festival and more a weird, wild ecosystem unto itself -- a city of 65,000 that is built in weeks and vanishes soon after -- only to reappear a year later in much the same fashion. And it is MASSIVE. Not including the 100-acre "Centeroo" where all the music happens, the camping area spreads out for another 460 acres: a sprawling megalopolis with "official" streets and avenues and themes -- such as 'Star Wars' and 'Sixteen Candles' -- and where people hawk everything from $50 laser pointers to tie-dye t-shirts to, well, other stuff. I've never seen anything like it.

Girl Talk, along with some other friends from Chicago, led me on this exploration of what I've dubbed "tent city." We took a walk to stretch our legs after an intense, amazing performance by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, who were joined by two band members from the next generation of E Streeters: Jay Weinberg -- drummer Max Weinberg's son -- and, for one song, Evan Springsteen (I'm assuming you can guess the lineage there).

Most of my afternoon was spent interviewing Bonnaroo artists such as Ted Leo, Girl Talk, Kaki King, the Giraffes, and Zee Avi (check back later for Fuse.TV's web-exclusive interviews), and watching Wilco galvanize the crowd from a platform lofted right above the stage. Pretty amazing. Check a clip of Wilco playing "Handshake Drugs" below:

Elvis Costello At Bonnaroo, June 13, 2009: Photos

Posted on June 14, 2009 at 03:55 PM

The great Elvis Costello himself showed up at That Tent for a "solo" Bonnaroo show Saturday afternoon. Apparently, "solo" means solo, and then backed up by Jenny Lewis and her band. The band came on later in the set, but EC alone opened the show in style with "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes," "Watching The Detectives," and "Radio, Radio," bam, all in a row. And what was so funny about the show closing "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding"? Nothing, but it sure did make a lot of people smile. Pics:

Wilco At Bonnaroo, June 13, 2009: Photos

Posted on June 14, 2009 at 03:17 PM

Wilco took the What Stage (IE, the big one) at 6pm on Saturday. It was good to be back, they said. Judging by an opening quartet of "Wilco (The Song)," "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart," "Company In My Back," and "Handshake Drugs," they meant it. Pics:
