Tool At Lollapalooza: Photos

Posted on August 11, 2009 at 03:53 PM

Tool headlined the South stage on Saturday evening. Their show may have drawn the largest crowd at Lollapalooza; surely, many of their fans were at Grant Park to see Tool and Tool only. Maynard stood at the back, silhouetted and mesmerizing. Their roadies wore white lab jackets. They opened with Jambi. It was a typically sick Tool show.

Band Of Horses vs. Jane's Addiction?

Posted on August 10, 2009 at 12:24 AM

So here's the way it works at Lollapalooza. On either the North or the South end, you have a main stage and a secondary stage. The main stage is at the center end, while the secondary stage is at an angle, occupying a far corner within the same field. So basically, two stages occupy the same field. Obviously, both stages can't be going at once. It would be two bands playing at once.

The schedule reflects this. Once a band on say, the north main stage finishes, the band on the secondary stage—remember, occupying the same field/area—begins immediately. Or vice versa. It's pretty awesome, actually. One band says goodbye, and right away, music begins on the other stage.

Except for tonight.

Band Of Horses were scheduled to end their one hour set on the secondary stage at 830. Headliners Jane's Addiction were scheduled to begin their set at 8:30 on the main stage. But that's not how it went down.

At about 8:25, Band Of Horses began "The Funeral." The BoH favorite has the qualities of a great set-closer—it seemed obvious it would be their final song. As soon as the song ended, a droning, amplified hum came from the Jane's stage. The beginning of their show was set in motion. But Band Of Horses kept playing. They began another song. Meanwhile, a HELICOPTER circled overhead, clearly meant to be timed with the beginning of the Jane's Addiction set. So Jane's is going—they can't stop. They open with "Mountain Song." However, if you were in the middle of the field or back, you couldn't really hear, because Band Of Horses was playing.

Band Of Horses, however, got a late start with their set, thanks to Lou Reed, who played well over his allotted time, possibly twenty minutes. Reed, a noted audio perfectionist, began about fifteen minutes late, after much line-checking by his crew. Reed, clearly not concerned with Lolla's tight scheduling, played his planned set, not caring to amend or shorten his setlist.

So Lou runs long. Now Band Of Horses are starting twenty minutes late. By Day 3, every Lolla attendee knows how the scheduling works. The Band Of Horses fans are pissed at Lou—they fear a shortened set. Some booing occurs. Can't we all just get along? Yes. And can't we all just stick to schedule?

So:

1. Lou Reed starts late on the Budweiser main stage, plays his entire scheduled set, setting into motion a domino effect.

2. Band Of Horses start late on the PlayStation secondary stage, play their entire scheduled set, cutting into Jane's Addiction.

3. Jane's Addiction begin their show at approximately 8:32 or so, just as Band Of Horses finish "The Funeral." The Jane's band/crew/team assume that Band Of Horses would not play another song.

4. But Band Of Horses DO play another song. And then another...

5. ...While Jane's Addiction, led by Perry Farrell, THE FOUNDER AND BIG CHIEF OF LOLLAPALOOZA, play their show (which, incidentally, later featured Joe Perry of Aerosmith guesting on "Jane Says").

6. So if you're keeping score, Lou Reed dissed Band Of Horses and their fans (like Lou cares). Band Of Horses then dissed Perry Farrell and Jane's Addiction and their fans.

Wouldn't mind hearing the backstage chatter between bands, management teams and Perry that surely went down as soon as the lights went down on Jane's Lolla-closing set.

Wow.

Rise Against At Lollapalooza: Photos

Posted on August 9, 2009 at 04:01 PM

Hometown heroes Rise Against told the crowd that it was an honor to play at Grant Park, the site of the famous 1968 anti-war protest coinciding with the '68 Democratic Convention. After noting the history of Grant Park, they rocked the hell out of it.
